We were on the X today

Our regular duck season closes tomorrow so went took a ride today to get away from what was sure to be some crowds.
We played the wind and tide game and set up where I thought the birds would want to be. Away from everyone else.

We won.
We were right on the X.

Wave after wave of birds were dropping in.

It could not have been better. We downed a few and Mocha was quick to retrieve our birds.

She did have to work a bit harder to get one that was winged but made quick work of it. You just have to love a dog with drive and determination.

The ocean was also calling today so we took a ride out the inlet and there were birds working in all the usual places.

After we had our fill we decided to head back in to the clam beds and get a few to add to tonights pasta.

Today was just one of those days were everything came together.
Mocha was doing her part bringing the clams back to the boat but dropped one and just watched it on the bottom. She will normally try swimming down to get them but I guess she was just a bit to tired.

Well that's a great second to last day in my book. We will have to see what tomorrow brings.
Good luck out there for those heading out.

Glad to see someone had a good day John. Did you have the tender with you today for the ocean?
We get 1 more shot Sunday and then its just geese for a few weeks till next year.
good luck,
George

Sure glad to see someone who was on the "X"!. Congratulations on a great hunt, not only with numbers of birds seen but also in birds taken. Mocha is a great looking pup. What a nice way to close the 2011-2012 season. Good luck today if you are out there.

Looks like a great way to end. How were your brant this year? Mine were tough as far as numbers go.

Thanks guys. It was just one of those days.
Today it was blowing out of the west and the bay was ripped up. So I didn't take the camera out of the bag much.

George -
I didn't take the tender. It just worked out that we were near the inlet and it was safe enough to head out.
If you look at the one photo you can see the waves breaking on the west bar. There were thousands more birds just on the other side of the bar.

The Brant started showing early this year and they were very reliable. Numbers seemed average. They were about the only birds this year we really didn't have to work that hard for.

Mocha was lovin it. No Ice and a warm boat to get back into.

I went out today and I can now say this was the first season I did not have to break ice to get out. I can't believe how warm it has been.
We finally started to see some more Canada geese moving in and flying regular patterns. Hopefully they will continue so we can end the Goose season on a good note also.

Glad to see you closed out the season in style John! I packed in my season on Friday... had a great hunt in the AM with Dad at the blind, we both limited out on geese and I shot my first banded Canada! We also took one of the largest geese I have ever seen, which is pristine and I froze it to get it mounted for Dad. I spent Sunday putting away all of my hunting gear for next year and cleaning my gun.
Very poor year for the ducks out east, I didnt even shoot a mallard or black duck this year, they just werent around in the usual spots. We did outstanding on geese, saw a ton of shovelers around during the first half of the season and there were a ton of broadbill around at the end as well.

Great pictures John. Looks like a nice way to wrap up the season. Mocha looks to be doing well too!

What kind of birds were those flying in a big blob by the inlet?
