With Thomas and Craig posting great hunts, I guess I gotta jump in.
Got a late start, which was good. It was fogggyyyyyy, and damp and chilly.
On the way to my spot, I ran up 200+ redheads, bluebills and cans. Damn I was excited.
Problem was, the fog kept them grounded. Not much flying. Got buzzed by a flock of bluebills 3 times, on the 3rd time around they came close enough for me to scare the sh&t out of them 3 times. Then a whole lotta nothing.
Then about 9:30 a single diver come crashing in right next to my two canvasback decoys. drake canvasback!!! Can Fever, Miff the first shot, hit him on the next two.
About 20 minutes later, same story, single diver comes right in feet down to the can decoys, boom, hen canvasback!
Rest of the day I watched the raft of birds I ran up swim around about 400 yards south of me. They got up once or twice and set right back down. I counted them and estimated 250, all redheads, bluebills and cans. Saw a few groups of gadwalls in the distance but overall, not a lot of birds in the air. Stuck it out until 3pm, long chilly day in the blind. Got picked up and did a little scouting. Marked the spot the birds were rafted up at. Ran to another grassbed a mile away and found another big (200+) mixed flock of divers and gadwalls. This cold front sure pushed a lot of divers down to the coast.Gotta work tomorrow but I'm foresee a wellness day on THursday.
If you're only gonna shoot two, make it a good pair:
