I will be taking a vacation to the NC coast in a few weeks. What would everybody suggest we see along the coast, if there is time?

Are you heading down to the outer banks?? If you head out to the outer banks you should check out Pea Island refuge, cape hatteras lighthouse and museum, and graveyard of the Atlantic museum in Hatteras. Not much to be seen down there unless you like to fish and relax on the beach. My son and I go down there every January and hunt the Pamlico sound for Brant and pintails.

Kittyhawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head Light, Ocracoke Island, any of the beaches - there used to be a good crab place in Manteo - not sure if it is there now.

Have fun! Love NC and the Outer Banks. One of my favorite places.

The very north end of OBX is the old duck club (whalehead?) think it's in Corolla? It's been about 8 years since been there. Or on day trip off island to Englehard to see Lake Mattamuskeet/lodge. If your not staying right on beach in north end, take 4x4 and go north to beach you can drive on. Less people & fat people in speedo's thongs, way more relaxing. At least it was last time I was there.

I'd say charter a boat and go see the gulf stream
they catch a lot of big fish down that way oregon inlet or hatteras

I've been going to the Outer Banks for about 25 years, the last 10 years straight. Starting at the north end, Corolla Light House and the Whalehead Club, Wright brothers Memorial, Bodie Island Light House, Pea Island Noational Refuge, Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station, Hatteras Light House, Ocracoke Light House. Take a day and go over to Roanoke Island and check out Manteo, the Lost Colony exhibit, the NC Aquarium, and the waterfront Festival Park and the reproduction of the Elizabeth II ship is docked. There is a seafood retaurant right on the waterfront in Wanchese on the south end of Roanoke Island where a lot of the fishing boats are docked. There is a place on the ocean side of the bypass called "The Bird Store", around mile post 5-6 as memory serves me. They did have a good collection of old gunning decoys the last time I was in there. LOTS of great places to eat too. Drop me a PM if I can be of more help...

All the things mentioned are exactly what you should do while you are here. If you end up farther south you can go to the Harkers Island waterfowl museum, a must see and depending on where you are coming from you can stop at the Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park in Scotland Neck. They have over 1,000 ducks, geese and swans from six continents. Only thing is the plumage is better in the spring. Enjoy.

Depending on the amount of time you have available, I would also suggest visiting the Museum of the Albemarle over in Elizabeth City. It's about an hour's drive from Kitty Hawk. They have an incredible decoy display, with a complete old carver's shop set up. I took over 100 pictures in the decoy/waterfowl section alone.
