What's in your library?

A number of years ago I had posted a list of books related just to waterfowling, decoys, conservation, etc. that I had on my shelves. After going to the Minnesota Decoy Collector's Show yesterday and updating my list after my annual purchase from Dean Dashner, here it is. I also have all the issues of Wildfowl Carving and Collecting, plus all the Competition issues. All the issuses of the old Waterfowler's World magazine, Over fifty years of the Minnesota Conservation Volunteer. There's also all the issues of Wildfowl magazine and all the early newsletters and magazines of the Minnesota Waterfowl Association. I still have to make a list of pamphlets that I've colected over the years as well as articles that I had cut from Sports Afield, Peterson's Hunting, etc just because I didn't have the storage space for those. I apologize for the formatting as it looked fine when first uploaded from my xcel spreadsheet.

Has anyone got some other titles to add?

long list -

May have missed them but I don't think I saw either of Keith Russell's books on there

the Duck-huntingest Gentleman

or

For Whom the Duck Tolls

Wow... What a list... I will have to look into a few of those...

Me - I like reading Gene Hill and Nash Buckingham

Terrific Collection. Read the list, long list, and if I am reiterating those you have, I apologise. I sending this out from memory without going through my titles or further researching on the internet. These are some which you might find interesting.

1. The Bible: Duck Shooting Along the Eastern Tidewater.
Connett
2. WildFowl Decoys, Joel Barbour

Three Great old titles:

3. Lewis's American Sportsman

4. Sporting Scenes and Sundry Sketches.
Hawes

6. The Wild Fowlers. Charles Bradford

7. Gunner's Dawn. Roland Clark

8. Stray Shots. Roland Clark

9. Gunnerman's Gold Bigelow. Maybe a Derrydale, I have forgotten.

Many of Gene Hill's writings are not waterfowl but I prefer him over Nash.

Impressive listing of books, I am jealous

Tom, Remarkable collection! I noted that you didn't include two of Dave Hagerbaumer's books. His book, The Bottoms, is very hard to find and brings top prices. The other one, Selected American Game Birds, is common, and in most cases priced low. I currently have 20 or more copies of Selected American Game Birds that I am selling for Dave. All money from sales of this book will go to his wife. I also have several copies of The Bottoms that I have picked up over the years. If you have an interest, I will place a classified ad for these two book on this page sometime next week. Best, Worth Mathewson

Tom

You're way too organized. Truth be told, I have a soft spot for books...some guys have it for scotch, cigars or vintage shotguns, but my affliction is worst for books, and on top of that my wife is my enabler. You've got me beat on duck books, but we have thousands of books of wide ranging subjects. Books keep entering our house, but they never leave. We just keep adding shelves. I'll have to look a bit closer, as it will probably give me some ideas I need to add to my collection, I'm sure I have a couple rarities that I don't see here.

Best
Chuck

I am fortunate that my wife is also a book-aholic - so my collection/pile never becomes an issue.

beyond waterfowling subjects - I rarely find an upland hunting (grouse and woodcock) or fly fishing title I am missing, toss in Salmon flies tomes, double gun books and more than a few on early American history and Pennsylvania longrifles and the inventory becomes a bit large

i kept a computerized list like that for several years, and had a regular route of the used book stores in the area, and got all the dealers catalogs. But when eBay was new, and dealer went on the internet, my access to out of print titles exploded and the list was too much to keep up. Surprising even without it, I think I have only picked up a duplicate by accident once.

I applaud your list, as I have never been motivated enough to do the same with my library/collection of books, magazines, calendars, etc. All I do know is that I have a lot, and they are everywhere.
I try my best to keep the subjects in different areas of the house, that's about as organized as I get. The mailman may not like me, as I get a vast array of art, decoy, hunting, fishing and other magazines.

How many Highwood Farms book markers do you have? Most of my books were bought at decoy shows from wonderful, knowledgeable dealers. Many from Dean Dashner, he even got me a signed copy of Joseph W. Lincoln, by Cap Vinal. Many decoy books were bought from the authors. I appreciate and enjoy my books, and magazines, and read and refer to them everyday.

When I do go to a Decoy show, the first thing I do is look for a book dealer. They seem to be fewer and fewer, and that's a shame.

Tom;

Thats a very complete library you have. Do you have a modified Dewey Decimal system in order to track all your volumes?

The only book that I have that isn't on your list is a signed "Black Brant" by Einarsen, printed in 1965.

I have all of htese and of course more....

I use a freeware library program called BookDB. It is a pain to type it all in but once you have it it saves you from buying something twice. I have 663 hunting & fishing books in the data base.
Probably 50 or so that I need to enter and a few to delete....

Worth,

I am definitely interested. The collection started out because some books I was looking for at the library were on a waiting list that was in some cases months long. I just started to get them so that I could read them anytime I wanted to. My first book was Norman Strung's "Misty Mornings and Moonless Nights". It was from his story about flagging ducks that our group started to use the technique on the geese in Rochester, MN. Boy did it work!

For me, Waterfowling is more than just lifting the gun and pointing it at the birds as they fly by.

Unless I've missed it, and please excuse if I did, I don't see Bert Popowski anywhere in the list, or in the ones to follow. Popowski was mostly a freelance writer for outdoor magazines, but wrote a couple of titles, Calling All Game and Old's Hunting Handbook, covering waterfowling. Bert was mostly a "how-to" writer. but his first-hand experiences were fascinating reading -- particularly for me as a kid growing up in the '60s. The local rod and gun club in northeast Kansas stocked a sort of mini-library of outdoor titles at my local public library. By the way, I went back there a month ago -- nearly 50 years later -- and the collection is gone ...

Worth

I'm interested as well. Book collecting started for me in the 1950's, with the publication of Sports Afield KNOW YOUR DUCKS AND GEESE. My "live the dream book". Had many copies that all fell to the way side from wear and tear. My current copy was a gift from a very good friend. Each time I look at it, I'm a kid again. Have told my wife, when it's time to plant me, that little book goes with me......

I have read through these lists 3 times, but I am not confident that I will not list something already mentioned.
