What's in your library?

This string is turning into a remarkable compendium of duck hunting books (and related titles). I am certainly going to print it out for future reference and book hunting on the internet. There are some titles I looked at years ago and coveted and have totally forgotten about. I am now going to hunt them down on the Abebooks, Alibris and Amazon. I am hoping we can keep adding to the list.

Thanks all.

Here are some additional titles which I hope I am not duplicating:

Decoys Simplified. Cassion
Duck Decoys (Title might be off). Connett
Hunting Ducks and Geese. Janes
Ducks. David Jones
Wildfowling at a Glance. Coykendall
Lowland Game Birds. Kesting
The Labrador Retriever. Wolters
Water Dog. Wolters
The Art of the Decoy. Ernest
Waterfowling on the Chesapeake, 1819-1936. Sullivan

There may have been a full collection of Buckingham in the string above, but I don't recall seeing the following titles:

Tattered Coat
Mark Right
Old Miss

James Woods]

This has been a very neat thread to read. Ill add this to the conversation if each of you who posted lists had to pick just one book to recommend to another waterfowler to read what book would it be?

i don't think anyone has mentioned the new reprint of the book the movie Savannah was based on

'Ward Allen: Savannah River Market Hunter' by Jack Cay

Gotch'a!!!!! Wildfowl Decoy's of the Pacific Coast......by Miller and Hanson, with a ton of original art by Dave Hagerbaumer.

Getting one of your paw's on a copy of this for cheap is nearly impossible, took me years. It was a very, very limited printing. The thing is a coffee table giant. The star's lined up and I picked mine up for $35 on EBay only because the owner didn't spell the title right and definatley didn't know what they had. Not to mention mine is signed by both authors he-he I know, I know score. I would wager it's got to be one of the rarest modern (1989) books in a waterfowlers library.-Seth

ps.I hope you realize I had to copy the entire list, put it in a document and search for the word Pacific just to see if you had it already. You have a huge library, you da man!

pps. How does $285 a copy, sound? Just checked. $126 for a beat up one.? Crazy huh?

I am a piker compared to others on this list, but the one (there's a bunch I savor) I would always pick would be Connett's Duck Shooting Along the Atlantic Tidewater. Having a different author for each chapter, and a chapter for each area, makes it enjoyable to re-read every pre-season.

All the best,

SJS

Brandon: Great Idea. I can't pick just one so here are my top five:
Duck Shooting Along the Atlantic Tidewater. Connett
Gunner's Dawn. Clark
Ole Miss. Buckingham
Duck Shooting. Heilner
Pot Luck. Clark

Thanks Guys,

This has been a good excercise as I see that I've got quite a ways to go to get the library properly populated. I appreciate all the extra titles you guys have submitted as it gives me an extremely good list to work from and to start trying to track them down. Usually add between 4 - 12 titles a year so there's going to be fun in next few years getting some of the books. And since the grandkids are old enough to read maybe by reading some of the books they'll see how much fun waterfowling can be. I can on;y hope.

There is no single favorite, but there are a few that are at the top. "Misty Mornings and Moonless Nights" because it was the first. "More Waterfowl by Assisting Nature" because of its historical place as being printed by DU's predecessor More Game Birds in America. What's interesting is that it suggested and predicted many aspects of the programs that we do have to help preserve and restore wetlands and uplands.

One of Regional significance for me is "Draining the Great Oasis" as it describes the draining of five lakes in Central Minnesota for agricultural purposes. I've found where they existed by utilizing satelite photos and you can see the main ditch and its laterals extending outward and the old shorelines to this day. People think Minnesota has a lot of water but it makes a waterfowler sad to think that 9 million of our 18 million acres of wetlands have been sacrificed for agriculture, mostly in the western and south-western part of the state.

Then there's the books on decoys and those about the carvers, conservation and waterfowling in general. It just doesn't get any better.

Tom

Great idea, it'll take me awhile to compile my list. Haven't spoken with you since before Harvey's passing and the last time I was there for a MWA meeting. I'll be there in a few weeks, maybe we can grab a beer.

IF I had to pick ONE, and only one........... THE DUCK HUNTERS BOOK , edited by Lamar Underwood. All the greats are in there, and then some. You will never regret having a copy.

I don't think anyone has mentioned "In the Shadow of the Gun"

Actually, I'm not sure if that is the exact title, but a buddy of mine told me about it. Supposed to be a first hand account of market gunning in Iowa and Minnesota if I recall correctly. I think it was just reprinted a few years ago and his wife picked up a copy for him.

Does anyone have any advice for getting a fair price in selling books? I've got a couple boxes of books to part with but I don't want to get shelacked like an old widow bringing her husband's guns to the pawn shop.

you've just created my christmas wish list for the rest of my life....did i miss Shotgunning Trends in Transitions by Don Zutz???

Brad - Amazing list! I was sick in bed this weekend and got caught up on some reading. Was in Keith Mueller's book, then read "Shang". Good books to read in sequence... From master, to contemporary...

As far as the number of books both you and Tom have, not only is it impressive but, it wouldn't surprise me if neither of you could find any help on move day with all those books... :)

Thanks for sharing... Some real classics... Pat

Has everybody thought about WHERE their Library will end up, after they go to the Happy Hunting Ground? This has been on my mind, ever since my best hunting partners widow sold his extensive Library, at a garage sale for $1 -$5 , and less per book. Afterwards she came to me crying, after she was told what they were worth......

As of yet, I have not made a list and estimated value, let alone who gets what. I've considered leaving some to local, and college libraries, but fear they would end up in year end sales. Auctions, and book dealers have also come to mind. I have kept my wife informed, but need a much better plan.

Just wondering what other "Book Junkies" have prepared for? I don't even want to think about all the Other Stuff we have! Yikes! Just look at all the wonderful decoy collections coming to auction now, and you Know what's ahead for Baby Boomers.
