I'm starting to figure some of this decoy carving out.
Best part is I'm having a lot of fun.I am running out of dermabond, still have a good supply of band aids through

Pat thanks for the kind words i used Sanfords site it was a Huge help when making this i have Zero artistic ability and he laid it out so well even I can make a duck shaped object. His web site has been a huge help to my duck hunting.
 
Josh, the tip of most bills kind of resembles the end of your thumb. Width of bill is same as the distance across the top of the head. When carving, try not to touch the bottom edge of the bill.
Center of eye is about level with top of bill and about as far back as from the bottom to top of bill, closest to where it intersects the head. Check this with a nail, even on a specimen, it should become clear.
Keep at it. You will be amazed at how quickly you will have your own personal rig of dekes, and how much fun you had making them. Well, except for the occasional self-inflicted wounds![sly]
 
Thanks for the input George I copied a heaters 72 head for the pattern. I will make those adjustments next I'm going to make a blue bill head as thats where my decoy spread is lacking. My brother gifted me a powermatic bandsaw and a 6 foot piece of 5x6 cedar so i will be busy.

I need to replace my cork Goosander with a hollow cedar version - for our late-season river hunts.


Question: How long is the body? These are enormous fowl. I'm thinking of shrinking my next one down a size or two....

Brad the chance for a Ganser Slam in one setting is very near and dear to my heart.


Steve the bird is 18? from breast to end of tail. All hollowed it is actually a very reasonable weight for its size. First common I have ever carved. I have some cottonwood I milled from the Missouri River. I may carve more of them from that tree. It was pushed over in a flood due to the bank being washed out. No telling how many common mergansers flew by it during its life.
