Where does everyone get their decoy weights from?

I have used a home made mold (Pete's). It was just a poplar plank that was ground out with a foredom to form the shape. You can make it as big as you want but the ones i got are 1.5-2lbs.

Awhile ago I tried making weights into a ladle and the lead kept sticking to the ladle. How do you get them out of a muffin tin?

like Tom- i went with the muffin tin- i could make them thicker for geese - thinner for ducks

i bent a piece of metal coat hanger into a ring with extra extending out and hang that from a rod across the top of the muffin tin so that the lead rises around it

a heavy rubber band through the eye is use to wrap around the keel

You should be able to blacken the mold with a candle. The soot acts as a release agent. Your ladle needs to be hot unless you are using it for a mold.

Here is a good link to the how to of molding lead.

I would use wood or plastic to make a positive mold of the size and shape you want and then use fire rated silicon to make a negative mold of that piece.

There are many examples of this on the you tubes and net.

I've been lucky enough to find a few telephone poles that had been knocked down. They had a heavy gauge copper wire ground line.....uninsulated. They made great wires for weights. Lead from a recycle yard and molded in a muffin pan. Never had trouble getting them out of the pan. Once cold just yank.
