Why I like sculling.....

I'm still in bed, in my pajamas!

Seeing how our ducks can be counted on one hand. I decided that I'd rather scull than hunt over dekes.

Plus we should have a blue bird day and 60+ degrees.

Tide is perfect too.

I'll give a full report later on.

Good luck to you decoy floaters all set already, I'm thinking of you guys as I sip my coffee in my camo moccasins, haha.

Good luck to you. I'm up early as dove season came back in today. I found a field loaded with them! But couldn't find the owner...lol.

I'm going to try another spot. Low pressure, time with the puppy. It will be good either way. And it is better dove weather than duck weather for sure!

We can't hunt them here. I am more excited to get into upland hunting than ducking when we move. It would be nice to have options.

Good luck those little birds are delicious!!!

Well I saw very few birds. But we saw some golden eyes about a 1/2 mile from the launch so we launched the scull and gave it a whirl.

Goldeneyes have been difficult each time I tried to scull them. This time was no different. I got about 80 yards away and they took flight. My buddy had to get home to make it to his gill net monkfish trip he was observing, so we paddled back to the launch.

The ducks won this round but I shot 3 squirrels in the afternoon. Almost enough for a meal, lol.

my favorite right now is just soaking the quarters and backstraps in buttermilk overnight. then dousing them in seasoned flour (tony chachere's usually) and pan frying in butter.

way better than chicken wings, if squirrels were only bigger...

squirrel jambalaya is another good one too. for that i keep them whole and slow cook them in seasoned broth so i can pick the meat.

nikki loves telling people she eats/hunts squirrels, she said the surgeons she works with didn't know what to say.

I season them, dust them in flour, brown in bacon grease, set aside, brown a sliced onion & then simmer all in beef stock until tender. Remove squirrel, add some corn starch in water to make gravy. Serve.

Hi Chris,

I just bought a scull boat on October 18 and finally got the Certificate of Title and Registration today!

I bought a Merrymeeting Bay Gunning Float. It was home built in 1980. I have yet to get it in the water. I am still waiting from the Division of Motor Vehicles on the trailer. So she is still untested.

If I could ever figure out how to upload pictures then I could show you what it looks like.

I love the history behind this boat. I had to drive almost 500 miles to pick it up. I am so glad I did.

What kind of scull boat do you have Chris? Can I see a picture of it?

Yes, they are common where you find them and not where you don't, if that makes sense.
My late uncle's ranch 3 hours north of here had a lot of them. I shot a few the first year I lived with them, they are big, easily 2-3 times the size of our grey squirrels.
A the first year he owned the ran, we left them alone and only shot grey squirrels.
They prefer more open woods and even roam out into pastures. Feeding the cows, we would sometimes see them bounding across the pasture from pecan tree to pecan tree.
They were also quite curious, it wasn't uncommon to have them "sneak" into the tree when deer hunting and come down to check you out.

I would love to see one, big game squirrelin!!!

My scull boat is a sea coast gunning float, no motor for me. All oar work

While visiting Cleveland this Fall I took a walk, and was astonished at the squirrels' size compared to the ones back here in Rhode Island. Don't know what sub-species the Cleveland critters were.

I dont know the range of the fox squirrels, but i do know they are big.

I shot another squirrel today. I planning on have a fried squirrel fest for my buddies birthday, its has been a very long time since i have actually had a meal of squirrel not just a few nuggets. Can't wait!!!

Back in Georgia we usually found fox squirrels in open, piney woods while the gray squirrels preferred the hardwoods. The fox squirrels were big and came in several color phases, some of the almost black. We considered them sort of a trophy.
