Wildfowl Carving Magazine. . .recommended??

I am merely hoping to get started into carving my own gunning decoys. I have started to play around with a few foamer Brant dekes. I had some of the pink foam laying around and just wanted to try my hand at a simple and free medium available. I can see myself working on my own rig.

I am curious to know whether a subscription to Wildfowl Carving magazine would be worthwhile.

I also noticed that Wildfowl Carving sells project or pattern books. Are they worthwhile?

I am hoping to get together with some guys locally to learn what I can and was also thinking about picking up a starter kit from Willy at the DuckBlind. I am thinking that I would like to make cork birds for my rig in the future.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

My 2 cents. BOOKS : Duck Decoys by Eugene V. Connet

Making Decoys The Century-Old Way by Grayson Chesser & Curtis Badger

Game Bird Carving by Bruce Burk (for the weatlh of info)

The Ducks, Geese & Swans of North America by Francis H. Kortright (cuz it's so darn good)

I have never worked with foam, so not a clue about that aspect.

see if you can find a mentor in your area--There have to be a bunch of pineys that make gunning stool--If not, i am in dover, and can get you on your path to addiction!

Thanks for the recommendations on the books. I picked up Grayson Chesser's book recently. I will take a look for the others you mentioned.

There is a book that I have seen in several posts on this site. It has a spiral comb or wire binding with what appear to be large patterns for various decoys. I seem to recall the pages of the book are oversized to accommodate the size of the patterns.

So from my vague description, does anyone know what that book might be?

George, I am sure there are plenty of "Pineys" around. I tried the foam because I had it around. I was mostly interested in seeing if I could rough out a shape based on a pattern. They seem to be headed in the right direction. My preference as of now would be to make them out of cork. Although, that is not based on experience so that may change. I do have several cedar trees drying right now that I am thinking about turning into decoys.

Jon, thanks for the link to that site. I have been over there before. Can't remember if I signed up yet or not. If you have to been a registered member to see the photos then I must have. I figure I will learn things over there too. Otherwise there seem to be so many talented carvers here to get help and advice from too.
