Winchester Model 24....

Hey there - was curious if anyone had any experience with the Winchester Model 24 side by side shotgun. I've been looking to get an older double barrel for a while and I saw that KTP had a few of these for sale. I found an article online about this gun and it had some good information. Mostly, they seem like good guns all around. Well made and reliable.

I'd appreciate any input.

Thanks,
Nathan

Hi Nathan,
I grew up shooting a model 24 16 gauge that belonged to my father. I own 3 model 24's, in 20, 16 and 12 gauge. They are awesome guns that are very well made. Once considered the "poor man's 21", they don't have all the frills (no single selective trigger, ejectors or fancy wood) but a great reliable shotgun. All models are 2 3/4" only, which has never bothered me. If you pick one up, I think you will be well satisfied.

It depends on your taste. Me, second ugliest SxS ever made, (Mod 21 is the ugliest) boxy and just doesn't feel right to me. Quality from what I know is ok, not expectional not a total clunk either. But there prices are some of the cheapest on old guns you can find. If you like the looks and feel, try one.

My dad has a 16g and he gave me a 12g that we gave him years ago when lead was still legal for ducks. That 16g is the sweetest pointing and swinging SxS I have ever held. I have never handled one of the good Parkers or early LC Smiths to compare it to, but it does out shoot any O/U I have ever handled. It is an upland dream in 16g.

The 12g has yet to be shot on anything but the trap range. It handles much like any of the old SxS guns with 30 inch barrels - a little heavy in the front hand but the follow through is just perfect.

The double triggers are fun. Dad has been shooting his 16g since 1950's so he can mentally switch between which trigger is which just fine. I have to think about it on my 12g, but it is easier than trying to figure out which direction the switch is on the O/U.

The only problem I have found these days is the sellers think that are worth lots of money because they are old. Just because they are old does not make them an $800 gun.
