Received a big packet full of envelopes for the wing survey this weekend.
Any one else receive theirs?

This is my first time to be selected for a wing survey, I'm looking forward to it!

Carl,
Yes,I get them usually every other season. Have been doing it now for about 10yrs.I received a letter informing me that I will be getting mine Soon.

My envelopes arrived Sat. I can't believe goose opens here Sat. Being a water hunter I'll wait until mid week after the holiday crowds are back at work or in school. This 3 day weekend I hope to get my new boat project finished. Probably won't be painted but if she floats and scoots over shallow water I'll be happy!

A package from USFWS was waiting for me when I got home. Early goose season opens here in SC Saturday. I've done it a few times now.

I was fortunate enough, rather downright honored, actually, to have been a participant in many of those during the 80's and 90's.

I always enjoyed taking part, and waiting anxiously for the results in the spring.

I haven't, however, been drawn in the last 12 or 14 years however, and that's ok. Time for others to take part in, and enjoy the experience.

You received 50, Jode? My stack doesn't even look like it is close to that.... Apparently, the USFWS tailors these to the individual shooter's abilities!

I did it three years in a row about 8 years ago or so. I haven't done any since. Enjoy the process....

Have never had the honor of participating in the survey, but a few weeks ago I got to see where the envelopes end up. On one of the off days from a Muskie fishing trip with my brother, I went to check out his office (He works for US F&W). As we're walking down the hall he remarks, " you know those waterfowl wing surveys, the guy in this office gets them he also gets the HIP data". BTW, it's kind of anticlimactic.. looks just like a regular office [;)].

I didn't get to meet the guy as he was out of the office that day, but it's always interesting when you get to see that programs like these aren't just some giant amorphous 'black box'. Well....at least I thought it was kind of cool.

I guess they do. In the initial request they asked how many birds I shot this past season. I assume they based the number of envelopes on that.

Mine came over the weekend. This will be my second year. Its cool getting the information on your kills and hopefully the wing data plus HIP information provides for science based decisions at the top. Just a word of caution, last year was my first year and I had to guard against taking birds I might not have the year before so I could stuff an envelope.

Why would you have to watch what you shoot? I mean other than making sure you don't go over your limits?

Good question and nothing to do with limits. I don't shoot what I won't eat which is what i was alluding to. I try to avoid divers, but I have to admit getting the envelopes made me a little more inclined to shoot a bufflehead once in a while - after all they just need a little seasoning. A couple years ago I shot a hen red breasted merganser because I wanted a specimen for a decoy order.

Very interesting. I get not shooting what you don't wanna eat, or needing a specimen for something.....no issues with either of those things

Heck, I know someone who won't shoot ruddy ducks because they're "too cute". Not because they won't get off the water all that often, but cuz they're too cute. To each their own and I respect that. I was just confused about your statement

That's funny! I have to admit an affirmation for Ruddy Ducks. I also think they are a bit "cute", and seldom shoot at them.

I won't shoot Buffy's for the same reason. Especially the hens
