Sorry to hear about your son's losing his dog. Around here most of us have gone thru that a time or two and it is the pits. Losing a good hunting dog is like losing a kid, they become part of the family and it takes time to get past it which is natural.
I honestly feel that Steve Sutton has the right idea, get another pup a few years before you know your older dog will have to be put down. They can do some hunting together, the pup can learn quicker and they can be pals too. And when the time comes it just has to make things a little easier on us if nothing else.
Please give your son my best and let him know we are all thinking about him at this time.
