Yamaha/mariner motor question

Maybe someone can help me. I bought this 40 HP mariner two days ago. Took it out ran perfect but can?t figure out the shallow water drive. The bar that is connected to one of the trim holes just flips back and fourth freely. If I pick up the motor and put the bar in place it works but this seems impossible while operating a boat. I guess there is a piece missing but can?t find anything online does anyone have a motor like this? Try this link for a parts diagram, need the serial and exact model number, otherwise I'd look it up for you. FWIW; it does not appear to me that anything is missing.

I dont Have experience with this model but looks like you just use that bar like a kickstand to keep the motor in shallow water mode. The weight of the motor should keep the kickstand in place. Shut the motor off when getting close to shallow water, Stop the motor, prop the kick stand, Restart. It?s a lot easier than my 2.2hp merc which requires more muscling (granted it was less muscle due to weight than your model) to get it where I wanted.

I could be wrong. Just what I would do with that thing. Or rig some other post-consumer system

I had a 40HP suzuki and it was basically the same thing, but it had a little stick-out handle on it to work it up and down
