Yesterday afternoon in the marsh - more photos

I spent yesterday afternoon in one of my favorite places again. There’s still plenty of ducks here although it seems some left. It’s only a matter of time until they all leave, so I’m making the most of these last few weeks.

You can see there are still ducks and coots here. I took a little lap before setting up.

Purple Gallinule. This little guy posed real nice for me. There was a bunch around Saturday.

A Black Skimmer…skimming.

And a flock of Blackbelly Whistlers coming in at dusk.

Next weekend I’ll be heading into the tidal marshes of Pelican Island for a change, hopefully to photograph a few Pintail, Wigeon, hoodies, and other migrating birds of all sorts… maybe even a few shore birds as well.

Say Mr. Hitch,
Those a awesome photos. Everytime I see a purple gallinule it is amazing the color on them. But that skimmer shot is great. Wonder if one has ever had a sudden shange in flight path after finding more than they wanted while doing the skim?

WOW! It's too bad those couple out of focus lines are on the whistler photo. Your timing was great and the sky color is awesome.
I think these are about as good you have shown us.

Oh and I love seeing fully colored bluewings. Makes me think about the snow we got last night melting and filling up the small ponds for their return.

If I get the right palm frond, my next frond decoy may be a gallinule. Beautiful!

That would be cool. I have over 4 gigs of ref photos now. They were out in force and very good subjects yesterday. They are pretty. Mean to each other, but very pretty.

Thanks guys for the nice words,

You can see the dead willows behind the Skimmer. There are many submerged as well. And plenty of gators too. I'm sure dragging the mandible through the water was getting their attension. The skimmer was there for a good half hour, having very good success, but I never saw it run into anything. They have to be fast, able to catch fish while grope skimming as they do. It was entertaining to watch.

A few minutes later. The lines in the other photo were cattails. I like the way the birds are spread in the first one, but the duck to the far right in this one would make a great mount pose.

Hitch, What are the chances of you getting me a galinule that pretty during the season? It would make for a nice study bird

great pics Hitch, it's awesome to see somebody put a digital camera to good use! I don't have an amazing lens on mine yet, and I have to shoot in manual mode, but your pictures turn out so sweet!

Thanks guys again. This will probably be the last weekend to photo the ducks, then it'll be time for Turkey!!
