As I did last year, I enjoyed the fine privilege of participating in a hunt yesterday with Parker and his family. Once again, it was a very successful morning afield.

We carried a canoe and gear into the same farm pond as we did last September.

First I set the Black Duck stool - the same 4 birds I had just coated with epoxy + sawdust and re-painted.

All the birds are E Allens - with the masters carved by Keith Mueller. I plan to coat and re-paint these 6 before our Regular Opener on October 10.

Here is what we hoped would entice a few Mallards......

As always, the pre-season wait was full of anticipation and plenty to enjoy. A family of Barred Owls gave us a nice little concert off in the distance. And, a few Spring Peepers forgot it was Fall. This Woolgrass kept me company.

Lots of Beggars Ticks all around the pond. When their two-pronged seeds ripen later this fall, let's hope there are plenty of ducks to take advantage.

The Sport and the Wise Old Coach await the flurry of wings.

Sure enough - right at shooting time - 4 big Mallards flew over our backs, circled behind the tree line, then sailed in through the gap on the horizon.

Parker made certain that one stayed in the pond. Since it was stone-dead, we waited a while to send Boo on her appointed rounds. Six other Mallards gave us a bunch of thrills but lived to campaign another day.

After shaking out a few off-season cobwebs, Boo remembered how to perform her special function.

I do not have any Grandchildren, but some of my fondest memories have been of the times shared with my Son when he first started hunting.

He has since moved 1500 miles away, out West living the dream in Southwestern South Dakota. He and his Long-term girlfriend are visiting as of this moment. They just recently purchased a good sized plot of land and are putting together plans for their new log house. When I looked over the "napkin sketches", I asked about the six bedrooms. I was quickly informed they were "for all of the kids", so maybe there is hope yet! The problem will lie in the 1500 miles...

Boo looks a lot like our 'Ole dog Missy and sure rekindled a bunch of suppressed memories!

Thanks for sharing the stories and photos. I see several very happy and proud men there!

I sure enjoyed this play by play account of Parker's day. First and foremost, that is some great shooting, Parker. What a grand way to begin the season. May you have good fortune in future hunts this year.

For some reason, Steve, the Coach just doesn't seem to be that old. That had to be a proud moment to witness which would make any Grandpa's bucket list.

Steve, just in front of those good looking mallards that you have there is a stump that some day when the pond might go dry or drop a little lower you could paint it as a duck butt. Looks like it could belong with that setup! Sorry for my over active mind----

Thanks for that wonderful story.
Al

PS
Loved the shot of Boo in Spin Cycle.

Way to go Parker and coach!! The Fire Arms Safety Instructor in me just loves to see that action open on the 1100, safety first and it shows everyone around that he knows what he is doing and he will be respected for it. Saturday is coming fast here.

Steve
