    July Workbench

I normally don’t carve this time of year but I can’t get it out of my system. I am slowly transitioning away from foam and burlap. I have made more decoys than I’ll ever use so I’m trying quality over quantity. Shown here is a blackjack that I took significant time to do the neck to body...

Spar varnish or traditions cork sealer?

I went to seal a white cork decoy with some spar varnish to find it had hardened in the can. I have a jar of traditions cork sealer I will use. I have not used any of the traditions sealer yet. Is it as good as spar varnish or should I hold out until I can get a new can of varnish? I need...

    Wood for decoys

Great info so far. I’m mostly a diver hunter so cans and readheads with a few others mixed in. I have a “full sized” bandsaw and a foredome. I’m not against trying a draw knife but I don’t really have the right kind of bench for that and want to dabble my toes in it before I invest too much...

    Wood for decoys

I’m in NE Ohio. Given that wood will be new to me I wonder if there are easier to find alternatives to start with that actually will float if I get one to work out.

    Wood for decoys

I might try my hand at a wood decoy this year. I assume I want cedar. I don’t know where to start trying to source it. I assume I want 3-4” stock. What are my options for wood species, thickness, glue thin board together, etc?

    Finger lakes?

I’m on a quest for a drake redhead for the wall. I understand the finger lakes are a good region for them. I was thinking of trying a layout hunt in that area. Or an off shore blind hunt. I’m a little intimidated and confused on the rules/ hunt able zones in that area. Any resources to...

MALLARD HENS - Some thoughts on painting gunning stool

I’m very intimidated by the painting of a hen mallard. Your tutorials are amazing but this one is daunting.

    Burlapped Herters

I have a significant rig of magnum divers that I inherited from my grandfather. They were in bad shape. I burlaped them myself and am very very slowly replacing the heads with my own carved ones.

Been hard here in Ohio, lots of pressure and little access. SD was good to me though.

Rough way to start the day….

Welcome to our new reality. I laugh whenever I hear my state talk about bringing up the next gen of hunters. We have so many duck hunters coming to in person drawings the moved to on line. We have a licensed hunter for every 14 acres of woods in Ohio. The area I used to hunt antelope in...

    Drought Conditions

Well it never seems to stop raining where I am. I have to mow my back yard every other day. Lakes are up and muddy. Rivers over their banks.

    April Workbench

Wrapping up the “decoy season” with a couple of low head ladies. My decoys tend to be fairly uniform in head profile. So I cut the necks off of these. Now to figure out sleepers.

    Spring Turkey

Lots of good advice. There are only two things I’ve ever claimed to be good at. 1. Drinking whiskey. 2. Killing turkeys. It used to be an unhealthy obsession, taking off 30 days to hunt from work. Then a wife and kids happened, and access and birds dwindled. Reach out by PM if you want...
