Federal regulations for duck

I've always wondered about something. The federal rules for duck hunting came out in 1918 and prohibited a number of changes and installed an actual season for same. My question is, since they specifically stated that you could not use recorded sounds, what options were there for guys to use recorded sounds before the rules went into effect. I cant imagine guys lugging a heavy Victrola out to the marsh and playing a 78 record of recorded sounds. Were there tapes or anything else like that back then? How would it been possible for guys to get the sounds out to the field or marsh? Must have needed one heck of a long extension cord.

It's only been dis-allowed since 1957, but your point is still valid. Wasn't anyone dragging a record player into the marsh. Possibly hunting birds near enough to their house for it to matter?

You might be surprised. I have an old (Herters, maybe?) record player designed for that purpose somewhere. I dont know when they came out for use, but seem to recall dating mine as likely sold sometime in the early 60s. I had a crow and maybe predator 45 for it. I'd guess that commercially developed products followed what people were doing on their own.

The one I have (or had) looks something like this one...

I'll have to search sometime to see if it is still tucked away. Ran on a lantern battery, as I recall.

Yep, I've seen similar record players in old trapping and predator hunting books from back in the 60's/early 70s!
