August Workbench

It’s August, let’s see those call builds. It’s going to be a busy month. Season prep is in full swing, and calls don’t build themselves! This is the place to post your work in progress, pics of your final builds, your thoughts on new builds, or questions about duck call builds.

I just finished one up today, fresh off the workbench, some Russian Crazy Fiber with Black Caps and White Inlays, with a Purple Double Ditch Band. I sleeved the call with a black ebonite tone board.

I'll leave the purple for William, but that is some cool looking stuff! I'm still off the lathe and boat-focused, but will find pics of some of last years calls to contribute to the thread to help keep it active.

That one is WILD!! I do love purple on the lanyard. I think the next Duckstein is going to be a wood call with some purple compliments. Im trying to dream it up as I think I want to find a coin and get one of those bands from him. I dont have anything wood from him, so I probably need to add one of to the collection, or the lanyard, at some point.

He might be too busy for me these days though. I got to him when he was a young pup, questioning if he had the talent to really be a call turner. Now hes got seth fields blowing his calls.

JK hes probably the most down to earth dude ive ever met.

Never too busy for you! From the very beginning, you were there supporting me. You helped me push forward through lots of challenges. That’s a part of the journey that makes small shop calls so special. I’m hunting over your early decoys and watching you on your carving journey.

I do need to get you the most recent cut. I’ve opened up the exhaust a bit. Looser feed, more range, and a little less hold, improvements to the high end too. I can find a purple dyed wood burl blank for ya. Check out this dyed wood burl that I have on the bench right now. I think we can find something worthy for ya and get a coin band on it.

Not hurting for a call right this second. I dont want to get in the way of your list and your money maker. plus ive got a lot of proto stuff happening in the decoy world. As you know, I kind of had a rough year last year and didnt make much progress. This year, making progress, but decided to overhaul and remodel the entire house (or so it seems) but family is all well (thank god). I think by next summer, im going to full blown making lots of birds and lots more custom stuff. Maybe we swindle another little trade. Otherwise im buying one from you, like a normal customer, and im not getting in the way of the list. Them are your customer base, you have a lifetime friend in me. its been a fun journey to sit back and watch for sure. Glad you beleived in yourself and just went for it because the work you are doing is next level.

We have made so many changes since those early decoys as well. New material, much much lighter birds (which helps with the swim). I think the birds I sent last have the newer keels but those very first I sent you had the proto keel when I was still figuring out the "reinikeel". So the next trade we make, you will surely have much better stuff. Working on full bodies and next year for sure im going to start making many more species. So we can figure something out. Will likely be making more trips to upstate NY in the coming years. Danielle's pops is getting old and slowing down, I need to just make it a point to get up there once a year and put in a weeks worth of work and help him out. Maybe I need to hand deliver the next ones and see the shop.
