The way I was taught was using a simple calligraphy pen. Once the paint is thinned down to the proper amount it flows pretty good. The pen doesn't have a reservoir so you'll need to refresh the paint frequently. The area of vermiculations on the pictured wood duck took about 20 minutes. Good luck!
Congratulations on starting your journey! I'm teaching one of my daughters to carve a bit now and she also had little experience. Be patient, learn the fundamentals and don't be discouraged by setbacks.
