In the past when I was burlapping decoys I would do two or three coats of gloss oil based enamel on them, both as a sealer and a base color. then I'd paint over it with oil based paints to keep everything compatible. The enamel soaks into the burlap and mastic pretty well.

Mark, I printed that picture you posted with the redheads, especially the hen head and it kind of changed my approach to the hens. I'm not there yet, but getting closer. I want to try some rustoleum rusty metal primer under my buff/brown flocking mix and see if I can get closer on the base color.

Your black looks great. The entire object is to get a duck swimming around in the decoys. Working decoys is a whole different thing than worrying about the decorative part. I was a flat artist long before I started carving wood, so the painting part is just something I enjoy. To be honest...
