What's on your Workbench - DECEMBER 2023

IMG_8603.jpg

This trio is two of my drake mallards and a hen by my father...delivered to Pat Gregory for the Delta Waterfowl Decoy Hunt. They pick a species and a place - this year was mallards in the Arkansas flooded timber. I carved an extra drake for the group to present to the host as a "thank you"...thought it might be a nice thing coming from an in-state carver.

Still have two brant, six gw teal, four redheads, three pintail and some wood ducks to finish carving, and more to paint.

Merry Christmas, all!

Few more

I might as well slip in here before the end of the year.

As some of you know, I became a great-grandfather in August of this year. Just in time for Christmas (it came off the lathe today in fact),
my present for my great-grandson, a hand turned Hard Maple baby rattle.

No dyes, stains or finish applied, worked my way up the grits to 1200 grit followed by a wool buffing wheel.

Thats awesome Dave. Does it actually rattle? What did you put inside to make it rattle?

Of course it rattles. Four BB size nontoxic shot are captured in each end cavity. Just finished up a 2nd baby rattle. Projects like this I usually do in pairs, just in case I mess one up.

Been working on six harlequins. Finished the first two. My 12 week old lab pup has found a spot under my workbench. I'm working on training him too.

Ronald

Your pup looks like he's in a deep sleep from all the carving and training. I noticed AK on a keel and the view out the window. I take it you might hunt harlequin with this rig.

One last dog painting for 2023. I used my sister's boxer Bella as a test subject for some new things.
10x10 acrylics
Hopefully next month I'll have something more duck related.
Happy New Year!

Last blocks of 23. Collaberation between carver T. Frank of Firehouse Decoys( one of my original Rat Pack carving kids) and myself as the painter. Pair will be for a NAVDA fundraiser. Just finished this afternoon.

At least I’ll plenty to do in February when the duck season closes

Great boat!
I was lucky enough to find one forgotten in a barn and buy it as a sixteen year old kid for $150. Hunted all around the champlain valley of Vermont and brought it to Maine with me in the late 90's. Even floated on the ocean a few times killing blacks.
Sadly it needed some work done after a very bad winter where rot seeped into the bow and stern and I couldn't find anyone to give it away to to fix up. I ended up drinking a toast to the old girl and torching her. Here I am 15 years later still regretting saying goodbye and just stumbled on a guy local who builds wood and glass (and carbon fiber) small outboard racing boats who could have fixed it for $200.
