Question about motor

I have a 1999 Alumaweld xpress boat. It is a 1546 in size and I currently have a 2005 2 stroke Johnson 25 hp as the motor. I was looking into getting a 40 but see there is about 70ish pound difference. The boat is low sided and the back already sits pretty low in the back to water, I probably have roughly 3-6 inches from the water level to the top of my back. Do you think a 40 hp would be too heavy for it or do you think it will be fine? Trying to get some opinions before I spend the money on a new motor. The boat is rated for a 40 hp but just seems a little too low in the back and I don't have enough knowledge to make the call.

I would not put additional weight on the transom. I understand this is not the same model year but I don't see how the specs would be affected unless your hull measurements are radically different that what is shown below.

Personally I wouldn't go over the 25hp even if you have the required steering to qualify for a 40hp motor. Of course that's me. I had a a similar boat in an Alumacraft and it had a 25hp tiller motor. It got squirrely fast on a bad day!

That hull is rated 40 horse that's a 2 stroke.

A 4stroke is going to be to much transom weight and become dangerous when you slow down because of back wash.

No way I’d put a 40hp 4 stroke on that hull.
A 30 2 stroke maybe. But sounds like it already needs pods to add some lift to the transom

Thats the trick. Age of hull is 2 stroke era. Less weight than current 4 stroke motors by size. Look up some specs on motor weights of 2 stroke 40,s of the 2 stroke era and compare by weight to current 4 stroke motors weights. The matching weight will give you your current maximum motor size. 4 stroke motor weights have been getting lighter with each new model upgrade . As someone mentioned pod installation will give you some extra float height in rear.
