I am starting this thread, because I would love to see the ongoing work that is being done this month on you alls workbench. I hope many more call makers step inside to this thread and I hope future month workbench threads open up from you call makers. just like how we do in carvers corner, I think this should be a norm as well here. I really enjoy it in the decoy making world, and calls carry a special place in my heart as well. I just dont turn them. Please please post up your work, as you go and final projects when complete!

Maybe just maybe some of these final projects will make it to my man cave in the near future.....

Killed a lot of ducks with the ol smuckers before going with the newest version of your call. The newest is an absolute runner.

I was going through a lot of calls looking for a new maker that I liked. I’ll never forget how impressed I was with the hold in your call when I first got one to try. Still impressed enough to keep one on the lanyard forever.

You’ve come so so far from those very first you were making. It’s been fun to sit back and watch!

Thanks!! I do. I have about 60 orders on my books for custom call builds, but my books are open and I’m still taking orders. I’ve got lots of great material for folks to pic through. I send pics of blanks for folks to pick for their custom call builds. I also make woodie duck calls. One of the cooler things I’ve been doing this past year is folding DU Raffle Coins into duck call bands and selling matched sets. Here’s a blasted woodland camo matched set I finished up last month with a 60th Anniversary DU Raffle Coin band.

My room mate in college was from South Africa. Every time he returned to the US from SA he brought gold Krugerrand with him. His sock drawer was full of them. Just think of the call band you could make from one of those!
 
Doug, how big of a material does it have to be to achieve something like this? Does it have to be a coin or is just something flat that can be worked?
 
I drill a centered hole in coins, and then press that hole inward using a cone. I haven’t tried to work with anything that isn’t round. At least not yet.

The ideal diameter for a coin or token is the half dollar. It enables me to achieve the right size hole for a duck call band, and a nice band height (top to bottom) at the same time. I’ve done quarters, but the band will be a shorter height. I know of one duck call collection which features calls with various state quarters for the band. The Ducks Unlimited raffle coins are 1.5” diameter and are the largest coins that I fold. They make great bands.
 
I just finished this one up. I built this one as a donation for a DU Banquet event. Hawaiian Koa, sleeved in African Blackwood with Aluminum Inlays, African Blackwood Caps and a Custom 60th Anniversary DU Raffle Coin band. Hope we can raise some funds for wetlands preservation.

I just folded a copper half dollar and applied a custom patina. I hand polished the raised areas, and then sealed it with a jewelers sealer to keep the patina preserved the way it is. Tonight I will fit the coin band to an African Blackwood call with copper Inlays. Work in progress.
