Building the cockpit

Building the cockpit

After installing the shelves on either side of the boat, I fitted and installed white oak mounting points for the oar locks.

The next step was to temporarily attach supports for the frames prior to cutting them for the cockpit opening. I then cut the ribs and installed a 1/2” by 1” cockpit liner. I carefully sprung and marked the curve to get a nice fit at the ends.

Using a compass and some can lids I came up with a nice profile for the stern knee. I made a template prior to cutting white oak for the knee. I oriented the grain of the oak so it was running at 45 degrees to the stern to minimize cracking.

I then masked the top of the ribs and painted the interior prior to installing the top.
