    Anyone wear float coats?

Hello Steve...no to the waders. We were training for work and tried to have on the clothes we'd normally be in while working on small workboats. Thanks for the feedback from others who have done the waders in combo. The float coats I've tried floated my entire torso...that is, I didn't sink...

    Anyone wear float coats?

Hey guys...haven't posted in a while (years). Work....kids...gunning. But wanted to chime in here. Work on the water year round including taking hunting parties. Best experience I ever had was doing a cold water survival class where we got to try different products IN THE WATER. By far the...

    Tod, All the birds

Hey Mr. Mathewson...P.G. from the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Hope all is well, did you make it to Scotland this summer? Been thinking about that, sounds like a neat trip. Brant should start showing up by Halloween here! Cheers, P.G.

Robber in CA - Part One

Guys...I thought that was awesome as well when it hit Virginia! Kind of reminded me of the footlockers in the old Bugs Bunny cartoons with the stickers from all over on the outside. There is a lot about the whole traveling decoy concept that I really enjoyed. Good luck, our regular season is...

The Robber arrives on Virginia's Eastern Shore

Paul, Yeah, I was thinking about you when we were out on the "Brant Tump". Remember the day with you and your Dad and the pea soup fog? Good times...good times! I don't blame Michele on "P.G.", but how does she feel about the name "Chunky"? Works for either sex, but might make a better...

The Robber arrives on Virginia's Eastern Shore

Brief update continued... 12/20--Hunted with my Dad, Paige Ross in a juniper point blind on the edge of Chesapeake Bay near Pungoteague Creek. My brother Mark and nephew Justin were gunning nearby. My family has gunned this water and marsh for at least 5 generations (probably more) and it is...

The Robber arrives on Virginia's Eastern Shore

A brief update...The Robber is on his way to Florida, but we had a great time in Virginia 12/19--Headed out to the Seaside out of Wachapreague, VA with Grayson Chesser of Holden Creek Gun Club and Harold Braggs and Dennis from Michigan. Brant did not cooperate, but the snow geese did! A great...

    blocks

Jim, The only poles I've found that can be used are those made of untreated white cedar (juniper). You used to be able to find a few around and I've made several decoys from those that have held up great. If you split them then most of your carving is not in the heartwood and that makes it...

The Robber arrives on Virginia's Eastern Shore

Update on the Robber gunning on the Eastern Shore... 12/16--Slipped out for a solo hunt rigged out for baldpate at a small saltmarsh island in Chesapeake Bay; point blind overlooking open water and eelgrass flats. This blind usually requires a decent goose rig which attracts all dabblers, but...

The Robber arrives on Virginia's Eastern Shore

Sorry for the late update to follow-up on Chuck's note. Apparently my computer got a "worm" over the weekend. If it was a dog you can give him a pill, but apparently that doesn't work with computers..."worm" has now been "cleaned", however (whatever that means). The Robber did indeed arrive...

    Reccomended reading?

Eric, I'd say you might get that impression. Buckingham came from such a background, many of his stories are centered around large duck clubs with wealthy and powerful members. However, his anecdotes about his forays with the guides and locals he got to know over the years, suggest to me that...

    Trap line pictures.

Dave, You're right about that! I used to keep a piece of rope in my pack just in case, but luckily never had to use it. All the 330's I used had the safety catch on the springs too like you describe. I don't get to trap any nowadays, but it's cool to talk about it with you guys! PG

    Trap line pictures.

Nice work on Mr. Bucky! My favorite set used to be the "scent mound". I'd cut the castor and oil glands out and dry them, then grind them up with some glycerin (from the drug store) and make a nice paste. Make a scent mound and put some of this goo on and funnel them into a partially...

    Reccomended reading?

Paul, How's it going? Great down here. Hope you don't mind a long and rambling list...most of these are out of print, but Alibris on the internet is a good source. It's blowing NNW 35 gusting to 45, which is likely destroying several blinds we just stuck...great evening to ponder some...

How do your earn your living?

Paul and everyone else, WOW...what a group of duck hunters! I'll throw my job out there too...I'm lucky enough to be a marine biologist...mainly doing research on oyster ecology. However, I was lucky enough to get some funding from the USFWS for this winter to study the wintering ecology of...

    Gadwall decoy

Paul, Let me know if you are definitely heading this way. Maybe we can go red drum or speckled trout fishing if its around September! Going to try and take my dinghy out tuna fishing on Friday...if the weather Gods cooperate. If you do get over here we'll have to have a whittlin' session...

    Ringnecks for this season...

Pat, Sweet! How do you shape your cork...those bodies have nice flowing lines that I have trouble getting with the cork. PG
