I don't know the technical name for the it. But here's a better view. On the front side off each joint there's a piece of 1/4" ply to hold it together until the epoxy dries. Once the decks are on, there's no way for it to move.

I haven't used the style Ed mentioned, I use the standard 1" brass tube. One end is pre-flare, cut it to lenth and flare the other end. There's a flare tool for it or just take your time with a ball-peen hammer. Everything else is the sam as Ed. Seal the wood and use a good adhesive.
