    Kara hummer mod question.

I would try to keep the rear deck area when you make this modification. The Kara, as designed, doesn't have much freeboard, so adding a motor and person and gas at the rear of the boat then having the dog suddenly run back to say hi can result in precious little room for error. I made that...

Topeka here we come. Looking for hunting opportunities.

Cheech, I lived in Manhattan (45 mins west) for 4 years finishing up grad school, and was able to get in a decent amount of hunting. There are numerous reservoirs in central/eastern KS that hold ducks all season. The ducks can be rather scattered in central KS, but they can be found if you...

Hey Al! Y'all getting rained on?

Same here 70 degrees and sunny. Snow geese have been passing by all week. I'm thinking the guys trying to hunt snows under the conservation order are having difficulty keeping up with them as they migrate back north.

What a long strange trip it's been....

Sorry to hear you had a rough year Jack, welcome back!!! There is a pretty impressive group around here. There was a discussion about breathable waders not too long ago that included stocking foot waders here. Jeff Reardon had a lot of input about them.

    Digital hearing protection

Dani, These did come with 2 different types of foam tips as well as 4 different types of rubber flanged tips that you can try. There are additional tips you can order as well if none of the packaged tips work for you. I wasn't a fan of the flanged ear plugs either and was worried about it. I...

    Digital hearing protection

My dad has pretty bad hearing loss from years of hunting without hearing protection. I (and those around me) noticed that I was beginning to say "what?" more often than normal. So, this past summer, I decided it was time to find a pair of ear plugs that provided protection while still allowing...

Just not safe to go today:

Carl, It's been below freezing up here for over a week now. Even the MO River has a lot of ice flowing down it now. We got a couple inches of snow over the weekend, so they should be headed your way! Enjoy the rest of your season, hopefully it will be fantastic!!!

Brigantines Dig Em Out Scout....AKA Scout

Chris, I'm sorry for your loss. We are incredibly lucky to get to share all of those moments in the marsh with these great companions. Nobody else quite "gets" it like they do. Scott

New Pup, Advice on an E-Collar?

I second the collar clinic. I inherited a collar several years ago when my previous lab was a pup. It was used for a couple of years then lived on a shelf in the garage until this past year when we brought got a new pup into the house. They put in new batteries and cleaned it up for a set...

    Hooray for adult teeth.

Looking good Bob! She looks to be steadying up very well (at least she isn't yanking your arm in that "after launch" pose). It's getting close now.

Only 33 days left to wait

Hi Al! I always enjoy seeing your spectacular humming birds shots as it's the first sign of the migration each year! Glad to see that Sonora is coming along in her training. Hopefully timely rains will fill up all of your spots this year.

Natural "camo" that isn't salt hay?

prairie cord grass is a pretty good choice if you can find it in your area. We've used it for years on layout boats and other guys use it on their bigger boats as well.

    Wis Boz

Jim, I'm so sorry for your family's loss. I always enjoyed reading his stories and the banter that he participated in with others in our 'virtual duck club'. Americans from that generation lived a life that I don't think we can really imagine, and came through it with a great attitude about...

Phil, I suddenly have this image of a CBR with chunks of foam strapped to his sides, chest and back sort of like the Michelin Man :)

What does your duck dog do during the off season?

Explore a whole new world, of course! The local conservation areas have been a great place to explore. We're working on sit and stay while geese are flying by and running around And, of course, we eventually found this AWESOME mud hole with all the really cool stuff

    Dogs and Shell Lake skiffs

It is a Hoefgen, and I've not tried it with a dog. I would be more hesitant to hunt with a dog out of it than with a Kara. I was trying to point out the differences of the hulls even though both are double ended type boats.

    Dogs and Shell Lake skiffs

Double ended boat has a pretty wide range of meanings. I used a Kara style boat for years with Bailey They are VERY stable and I had no problem hunting a dog out of one. Even the few times she fell off the bow in the dark in 6-8' of water, with the boat full of decoys, I was able to get her...
