    Displacement calculation?

    I get 312 lbs (30 x 72 x 4) /(12 x 12 x 12) cubic feet x 7.48 gal/cu ft x 8.34 lbs/gal

    Big Swamp Tree (Pic)

We have some Burr Oaks on our family "farm" that are huge. I've always thought about measuring the circumference but never have. I'd say there are similar in size. They've seen a few years.

    Breathables vs neoprene

I definitely prefer the comfort and range of motion of breathables and wear them whenever I can. I still have a pair of neoprene waders that I use when the temps get down into the teens though I doubt I will replace them when they give out. They are especially nice when (as someone above...

Ideas for a duck boat cart

I had one of my best hunts of the season yesterday. With all of our early ice, searching for new spots led me to a spot that was about a mile from the road that ducks were using. That meant dragging the boat that far so I could carry all of my gear in it. I had bought a boat cart a few...

If we keep getting frozen off the river.....

It's definitely cold this year, but I do remember a year back in the late 80's being able to walk across the ice in the marshes on the opening weekend of duck season here in MO. Back then it was only a 30 day season so it was likely the same time frame (second week in November) when that happened.

    Retriever problems

I'm a big supporter of force fetch as well. I've only been through it with one dog, so this is more of a question than a statement. If Tom chooses to go that route, should he avoid mixing force training sessions with hunting in between? My experience/understanding was that when we were...

I hope to see you again Mikey....

My condolences to both you and Steve, Dani. We got to watch Mike grow up around here, sharing in many of his stories. As others have said, he lived a great life.

    Kansas Trip?

Tom, I was living in Manhattan the last 4 years and got in a decent amount of hunting. Like anywhere, the more effort you put in, the more rewards you tend to receive. There are a good number of ducks that move through the state Timing the weather is a huge issue, but those hunting the...

    Devlin bluebill build thread.

Rich Geminski mentioned above the idea of drilling a hole in the motor mount and sticking a spare plug into it. I thought that was a brilliant idea, and it will happen on my boat this fall. Mine spare plug is buried somewhere in my blind bag, which doesn't always make it into the boat.

    Climate Change vs. Waterfowl Migration

Let's remove the argument about the scientific publication process and look at the actual issue. First, I do see that there is documented warming occurring at what seems to be an elevated rate. Does anyone not see that? Discussing that issue eliminates any issues with models or predictions...

A lot of you know my middle child is a baseball player

Eric, Congratulations to him and you/your wife! I encounter a lot of kids coming out of high school into my classroom who don't have that persistence/perseverance. They struggle a lot when things don't always bounce their way (or there isn't a reset/change game button). It sounds like you...

How do you post an image?

Andrew, That looks right for images that you upload to photobucket. You just paste the address into the image location box. If you want to upload them directly to duckboats.net, the file size has to be less than 100 KB and you use the attachment option below the text box. Click the browse...

    June 21 carving day

Tom, We're moving back to Maryville next week. I'm still wrapping up work on my PhD, so we'll see if I have time to make it down. I have a buddy from Columbia that might be interested as well. Hope to see you then! Scott

    Best Retriever Training Books

Pat, Yep, I found it. That was disappointing as I have a pretty high opinion of their approach. Since I had a collar, I guess I read right over that comment. Thanks! Scott

    Best Retriever Training Books

Pat, It's been a while since I read the book, can you tell me where they mention using slingshots or rat shot? If they do say to do that then I'll likely stop recommending the book. However, I know I never did any of that with Bailey, and don't remember reading it. Scott

    Best Retriever Training Books

For the basics and for a new trainer I'd recommend starting with "The 10 Minute Retriever." It does a great job with making training fun and unstressful. This will get you through obedience and retrieving (I don't remember off hand how good their handling section is). If you get more serious...
