    Finally in the water

Wow. That's quite the boat and quite the boat house. We don't see too many boat houses on the lakes here in NJ. That is really slick.

    Rowing a Higbee?

They all were designed with oar lock ports on the front of the decoy rails. Mine had them and was a newer version made by "Duck Machine" in the 1980's. Here's mine before I sold with the oar locks. I removed the clamps and used the hole there to put cord through to stick my sticks in the mud to...

Anyone using a new Duck Invader 13?

John, Quick question for you: I noticed you blocked off the holes the grass rails near the stern. Was that stock or did you fab that yourseld?

Anyone using a new Duck Invader 13?

Yes, I just took delivery of mine in September and somehow had it ready to hunt by first split open here in NJ. So far, I love the boat. There is plenty of room for two guys. If you are not two very large guys, there is probably room for 2 and a normal sized dog. The boat is similar in concept...

    Duck hunting cancelled in MA?

There are many things I will abide by: Speed limits, traffic laws, not going to restaurants, parties, movies, large gatherings. Hell, my wedding reception was postponed a year (wife and I still got married in the church with our parents present). Absolutely zero chance I would let a "law" keep...

    Duck hunting cancelled in MA?

You're a duck hunting guide taking clients. Simple as that.

    What's on your WORK BENCH ? - NOVEMBER 2020

Steve, You are 100% correct. On these, the original builder didn't even take the time to level the ridge from the mold used to make the head. That should take between 1/8"-1/16" of the gap away, at least. At that point I may be able to even use caulk. I have caulk, apoxie sculpt, fairing...

    What's on your WORK BENCH ? - NOVEMBER 2020

Thanks so much, Steve. I believe I also need to level out the heads and the body bases. Some sandpaper should take care of that. I do believe I have an excessive gap between the heads and the body due to the original builder not really sanding the bases on both the body and head level.

    What's on your WORK BENCH ? - NOVEMBER 2020

Well, I finally have something to contribute. As many of you know, I was planning on rehabbing a vintage 12 decoy set of Brant foam decoys. I have finally begun. I started disassembling the set. They will get repaired, heads re-fitted with SS hardware, restle coated with walnut shells. The wife...

    Some NJ first split action

Still in awe of that wood duck Jode. Nice work as always.

    Trailering Grassed Boats

Rob, I'm not sure where you hunt out of but if it's NJ/MD/NY/DE the "field green" raffia color I find to be a good mix for early, mid, and late season. I don't think here there is one perfect way to grass a boat. Pretty soon (if I find the time to cut some) I'll be adding some salt hay into...

    Trailering Grassed Boats

Sometimes pre-assembly is a necessity. I used aviary netting fastened to pad eyes secured in with stainless steel blind rivets. The aviary netting is ultra tough. I take my raffia, pull out a handful. Bend it in half, cut with scissors so the length is halved. Then I pull it through the aviary...

    Questions on propellers

In an effort to clear up some terminology: The motor's cavitation plate looks fine. It seems to be about even with the lowest portion of the hull down the center. I believe that's fine. The motor's trim on the boat, looks to be trimmed too far down or a little low. That's where your problem...

    Anyone else ever see this?

The slough we once hunted we went back to this time last year. It was absolutely amazing the transformation these things can make. Apparently, someone trapped all the beavers. The slough went from vast open water to a completely choked off puddle with massive growth of cattails and phrags. The...

    Questions on propellers

I believe the motor is sitting slightly lower than what you would want but in no way do I feel it is too low. I agree with the trim comment though. It does look like it is trimmed back a little too far.

    Anyone else ever see this?

We used to hunt a slough in northern NJ. One hunt, middle of December, we had no less than 10 beavers swimming around us. They are normally pretty docile. It takes a lot for them to attack. That tail-slap is a sign they are not liking you're in their space. It still takes them a lot to be...

    Questions on propellers

I have a fair bit of knowledge on props coming from the offshore fishing size. If you have a way to measure your actual RPM: You should be roughly 2-5% over max stated RPM's at a full load. This is the rule of thumb for marine diesels. For example, my boat which has CAT C9 ACERTS is stated to...

Duck Invader 13 Owners - Pics

I did the flapper drop test without grass and found it works a LOT better with grass on it haha. Guys, I apologize for the delay. Between trying to rig this boat for grass, helping the wife around the house, and work...I've been remiss with pictures. So far I've: - Mounted my motor properly...

Duck Invader 13 Owners - Pics

Christoph, Shoot me a text with any questions. The hay is a little shorter unless you find primo stuff. I've seen it as long as 2' in some spots. I have to cut some for my boat in a week. Still waiting on the rest of my supplies to attach the netting. They both look really good, the spartina...
