Cordura vs. Sunbrella - or better options?

About to redo a couple of South Bay Boat navy covers with Pat McCarthy of this site and we are looking at the material purchase, about three yards per boat. Will not replace the original mid-weight canvas fabric from 1982, but trying to decide on cordura vs. sunbrella -- or other options for...

April 2014 - What is on your workbench ?

Steve, one of this summer's projects is to work on some old Herter's model 72 redheads, along with updating some of the divers from Mark Rongers' old rig that I purchased several years ago when he was upgrading and that have been in storage since. Now that I have discovered the joys of the...

Great South Bay Scooter - Plans

Steve, great work! Could this be the start of the "Sanford Class" scooter brigade as sets of those plans begin to migrate across the country? I think I am enjoying your retirement nearly as much as you are! Best, Rufus

Looking for cheap blind paint/stain ideas

Thanks for the ideas -- already working on trying to get some contractor "seconds". Given the fact that the blinds are over/adjacent to federal waterways with lots of visibility and participation by trained federal biologists and others, reasonably sure the do-it-yourself creosote would earn...

Looking for cheap blind paint/stain ideas

We annually tend to a fair number of stake blinds that are 12 feet wide, four feet deep, and about six foot high across the back -- a fair amount of square footage. I am looking for a cost-effective way to coat both new construction blinds and some of our older ones with a flat, dark stain or...

Bill, enjoyed talking to you ... let us know what you decide to do -- tough choices! Best, Rufus

    Southbay navy top

That sounds doable...they did not use conduit for the frame, but instead used cable (Red Magnus was a phone company guy and knew his way around wire and cable). I have one complete but mouse eaten cover here that could be used as a pattern, since the canvas is still mounted to the frame. I...

    Southbay navy top

Ditto...still need to have that cover done, and if I could ship it up to their canvas guy, that would be great! Thanks, let me know what you find out, Rufus

    Southbay navy top

That would be helpful -- I had an agreed price (very reasonable) with John Patin, I believe that was the right name of the guy at the phone number, to replace my cover with one made of 1000 cordura. If they can't handle it, just get me the name of their canvas guy who did their South Bay covers...

    Southbay navy top

In the same boat, so to speak...have been leaving messages and emails for nearly a year. Somebody up on Long Island might have a better idea of whether or not these guys are still in business.

    Rufus' Tandem Trailer

Well, Dave is still working on his Susquehanna river boat, both of the South Bay boats on the trailer need some TLC and maybe a modified cockpit on one, the old aluminum canoe is finally going to get its industrial grade pontoons and be turned into a shallow water menace for the early goose...

    Rufus' Tandem Trailer

Rich, thanks! The F 250 was up in the storage lot with the Lance camper already mounted, so we went withe the readily available 150 -- did well! Hope to see you up on your stomping grounds next season. Best, Rufus

    Rufus' Tandem Trailer

Dave, thanks for showing up for the upload today! The trailer was originally designed for a 20 foot fiberglass striper boat, but we found a fabricator up in West Virginia who modified it to take two fourteen foot South Bays and strengthened it for a lockable motor box to keep outboards out of...

Great South Bay Scooter Rehab - Phase 4

Steve, really enjoying this project! At some point, could we get a good look and maybe a diagram (while your pencil is hot) of your original ice pike head? Any recommendations you would make on changing the original for design or materials? (Working on one of these is going to condemn me to a...

Question ref. mud motor vs. outboard (weight)

Thanks to all for the feedback and the calls. Decided to defer the mud motor purchase (to go with an aluminum boat procurement somewhere down the road) and just upgun to the 20HP Suzuki. The PortaBote people are running an in-the-box, shipped to your door with no tax Suzuki deal that beats...

Question ref. mud motor vs. outboard (weight)

Looking for some advice from the boat building and renovating crew... the "fleet" currently has two South Bay Boats (many posts on the site ref. these craft), one of which has a ca. 1982 Evinrude 15HP short shaft that has been on it since I bought it new. At 73 pounds, it gets the job done...
