Used plenty of AA #8's on woodcock, but like a lighter gun to get on the little buggers. I splurged on a Franchi Instinct at about 5.5 lbs in 20 gauge and haven't looked back. Can't hit a damn thing with it on clay targets, but it comes up fast to get on doodles as they rise and before they...

    Double Ender restoration

I'm no wood working expert--I'm just a guy who re-glassed one old sculling boat-- so pay more attention to comments that follow from those who are actual experts. Screws vs. nails: what did the original builder use. If nails, you'll probably need to get a clench nail. Plywood vs planking...

I love Winchester's AA shells for clay shooting. Are they making duck loads now?

    Whatcha Listening To?

I've been on a Talking Heads binge. We had a summer intern at work, and she and I had to share a long ride to a field work site. I told her I'd drive and she could play whatever music she liked. First up was Stop Making Sense--the entire album. Been looking up old favorites from that album...

More Canada Restrictions Against US Hunters

Yup, Dani nailed it. Most of my experience is with angling. There are waters I have stopped fishing because of the crowds, and it's easy to rant about the NH and VT and Mass anglers that are part of the crowd. But the fact is that the guy who first showed me those streams was from NH--they...

More Canada Restrictions Against US Hunters

One thing that keeps so much private land in Maine open to hunting, fishing, and other recreation is a landowner liability law that a friend who is a personal injury attorney calls a travesty. Essentially, if you allow the public to recreate on your land, you are pretty much immune from...

More Canada Restrictions Against US Hunters

This brings back memories. I lived in Michigan for a few years after college, teaching at an Environmental Educaton Center near Jackson Michigan on Storer Lake. I have no idea how widespread the population was, but Storer had a huge population of cranes--so many that the calling from flocks...

    Animal Cruelty Arrest

Ought to banned from any involvement with animals for life. And thrown in jail. Is this footage from an event, or from training. If from an event and the organizers didn't report, that should be investigated, too.

    Do you name your boats?

I came by my boat fixation from my grandfather. He had fleets of small boats. Only boats over 16', and only boats made of wood, were named.

The 1983 Merrymeeting Scull Boat Project

Love that heron decoy on the sculler! Great photo.

The 1983 Merrymeeting Scull Boat Project

Man, that in an 18' with a casting deck up front would be an awfully nice 2-man striper skiff for protected waters.

Anyone Have One Of Those New Style Truck Caps?

Congrats! If the colors are complementary, go 2-tone and save a paint job.

Welcome Wyatt! As long as you don't mind us old farts, you should fit right in.

    My new outboard came in.

I see a lot of Suzuki's on smaller work boats around here--clammers, small lobster boats, boats on oyster, mussel or seaweed aquaculture sites. Usually those folks are both price conscious and know enough to avoid motors that have problems. Happy with my new 6 hp, but I only have about 8 hours...

Check regs in GSMNP and the surrounding National Forests, too. I would not be surprised if a lot of it was Artificial Lures Only, but would if it was largely Fly Fishing Only. I last fished down there ~30 years ago, and did most of my fishing with a spinning rod.

    Canoe racks?

Two weeks since I last posted, and the saga continues. We did find the correct--and reasonably affordable solution I was looking for with a bed-mounted Adarac frame on one set of uprights with a 66" bar, and a cab mounted single Yakima bar with appropriate hardware to fasten to a 2024 Ranger...

    Epoxy Question

I just made some canoe repairs with RAKA epoxy using their medium epoxy and medium hardener. Working in 85-90 temps (not normal here, but it was when I could do the work), I found it a little on the thin side and the curing time to be really fast. I think you are right to go with slow...

    Canoe question

+1 on both themes above. Square stern canoes do not paddle well, but if you want to run one with a motor, you want a square stern. Side mounts for motors on canoes are an accident waiting to happen.

Add Slickrock Creek and Snowbird Creek, both outside the park. Pretty short hike (1 mile?) to the falls on Snowbird. And read Harry Middleton's "On the Spine of Time" while on the trip. One of the best senses of place I have ever gotten from a book.

    Bismuth Shot Size for Reloading

I don't reload, but I do shoot the BOSS bismuth shells. I've used both the 3" 1.5 oz and 2 3/4 1.25 oz loads. The 2 3/4 oz seem to perform a little better over decoys, maybe due to lower recoil. (Not that the recoil with the 3" is notably bad.) I shoot 5's in the early season for Teal and...
