I'm really happy to have him painting again. He had quit painting after a couple of critiques on another forum nearly a decade ago, of course who knows what kind of painting those knot heads were capable of, for all I know those two characters are 16 year old girls just causing trouble. I...

We've been carving lots of mallards lately, but got a few black ducks mixed in. These have the first run of IQ keels, or what Caleb and I call them Rein a keels. William Reinicke and I have been collaborating on all things decoy for close to a couple of years now. I gave him the...

it looks good, I'm not so sure the head is too small. I rarely know what day of the week it is, much less the day of the month, good thing I don't write checks anymore.

    Black duck gunner

I bought a piece of tupelo at our local woodcraft store a couple of years ago to carve some quail out of and it about ruined me, it was as hard as a rock. I went back to basswood after that. I taught a class at a local wood carving shop a few times about 30 years ago and always took payment...

    Black duck gunner

excellent work. I used to carve a lot of tupelo, but it was long before I made a decoy. I always figured after I started making decoys it would be ideal for a duck decoy.

thank you. Caleb does good work with the airbrush. whenever I make a group like this I like to have everyone of them a different pose. I'm up to 42 poses now with just one basic pattern. It's kind of a challenge to see what all can be made.

it's pretty handy to have someone painting for me. I still do a little painting, but very little. I do all the carving, design, and customization as well as most of the flocking, then it goes to his shop for a few days. I probably should keep track of how many decoys we are making, about the...

I got this bunch of pintails to Caleb at noon yesterday. This is what he had by 3 pm today. He's been working on a paint schedule for pintail hens, I think this will work.

That eye problem was an issue at first for me and took some time to solve. The eyes have to cure awhile and I don't put anything behind the eye like clay or apoxie sculpt that might cause that kind of separation. You can also bake the enamel paint on the eyes, something like 200 degrees, don't...

    July workbench

I've been working with one basic body pattern for about 15 years now for all of my big ducks like mallards and pintails. It's very versatile and this mallard makes for pose #41 on the same basic starting block. There is still a lot of carving and customizing, but it's kind of crazy what all...

    Heydey decoys

The only still water spot we hunt is a huge flat that only goes about thigh deep 100 yards off shore. It gets real windy and if you don't have at least 10 oz. or more the decoys will walk with the waves and be well out of range in a short time. For some reason though the ducks love that windy...
