Boat building: Stiffening a plywood hatch cover -- I don't want it to flex.

Thanks Dave, appreciate the example. Didn’t get to the hardware store yet to evaluate what they offer. I’ll report back once I do.

It will be secured but I haven’t worked it out yet. Somehow it will be hinged and latched. The little lip on the deck is just epoxy glued and only intended to mitigate water running into the anchor well. I have a drain built into the well, but didn’t want excessive water entering. The lip on...

Boat building: Stiffening a plywood hatch cover -- I don't want it to flex.

Wow, Interesting! I had no idea that foam could be used in that way, so never considered it as an option. Unfortunately the closest supplier of Divinycell is 1.5hrs drive away and I would need to buy a full sheet for $130. I’m gonna go check out my local hardware store and see what they offer...

Boat building: Stiffening a plywood hatch cover -- I don't want it to flex.

Thanks for the reply Steve, probably while you were typing I was sanding and came up with a simpler, more elegant solution similar to what you did. Just went with one rib 5/8 ply about 1.25 high… If I go down this path it’ll be simpler to construct — glue and fillet, then cover with 400gsm...

    Boat ride anyone?

Awesome! Just once, for the novelty value, I'd love to go for a boat ride in while its snowing. Meanwhile here it's just shorts and t-shirts...

Boat building: Stiffening a plywood hatch cover -- I don't want it to flex.

At the moment I'm working on the lid for the anchor well. It's 2 layers of 6mm (1/4-inch) Gaboon plywood and I want to be able to stand on it, even step down off a dock onto it without it flexing. I'm not sure if a couple layers of glass inside and out will increase its rigidity enough and...

I went through the entire shelf of mouldings and chose the best ones. Initially when I first glued on the moulding I had planned on it being the first of two laminations, but now I reckon it will suffice on its own, covered with two layers of tape and then a strip of HDPE over the top as the rub...

    2025 Devlin Snow Goose Thread

All good, sarcasm understood (y) So far I feel all screws have not been a problem: they are decently countersunk into the ply and then filled over. Most are under glass as well. Its the upcoming fittings and hardware that requires bolts that worries me. I'll make sure I have good oversize holes...

    2025 Devlin Snow Goose Thread

Very briefly, so we don't clog up Henry's thread... Thank you both, this is excellent, valuable info. The deck plates I'll endeavour to keep clean, and the stringer below them should act as the perfect support with a bit of a spacer. I'll monitor all the sealed chambers for moisture as best I...

    Aussie Cackler 14 build

We were expecting a couple of big jobs at work and the thoroughfare where I was building needed to be cleared -- so the boat had to move! This was a bit of a concern since the bulkheads two and three had not been filleted and the chine stitching was not super tight. It was necessary to have all...
