    One man's trash...

Bob- I enjoy seeing your frond blocks. I have a huge rig of carved frond gunners that i hunt over. I love the way they are all different and you can play with the varied shapes and sizes. Steve Sanchez here on the site and I are cranking out a fairly large number of them right now for hunting...

If you want to collect one decoy a year, which carver would you start with???

I would prefer one of the first from a new carver or one from a friend.

    Medical Miracle

So Ballard, what is the thinsulate rating for that boot? Be careful - some Pro-staff, goatee clad - black hoodie wearing gang might think this is actually cool new duck gear and clad it out in mossy-oak for next years line of tranformer duckwackage gear. So much for barrel stickers, hell they...

So I'm in New York over the weekend...

what is it about Jack using the word Torpedoed that gives the no visual recognition point to an actual submarine? I keep hearing "dropping the C---'s off at the pool" in my head (with a Sean Connery accent from the sub movie)...

What do the mallards eat in your part of the world?

Actually I saw first hand what they eat in Washington - they curl up on a golf course and eat coffee dipped scones from the fat little pudgy fingers of the nearest bus crossing guard. And then they lay down dead and pose on a piece of driftwood. I think that will pretty much wrap it up.

Expanded foam canvas decoys - how to pictorial

Kris- When I want heavy cotton duck/canvas, I buy it at a retail fabric store like Joanne's. You can use the cotton duck tarps from Home-repo/Lowes as well. Some of the first blocks - I did in heavy burlap - they expanded really well but did require a bit of sanding to shave the leaked foam...

    Another decoy idea like Derek's.

CK- I grew up using those types of blocks. For huge spreads they work great as filler. I would prefer that style (like a "t") to the speaders and silos that many use. If I remember I will take some pics of some deeks I made back in my teens.

    Another decoy idea like Derek's.

We have fronds, cork, cedar, foam and canvas deeks. Before we know it someone here on the site is going to post up some authentic-Lovelock cave blocks they have whipped out of tules. Neat idea with the seaweed – kind of has a Green-LEED certified slant to it. If you tell me the wood was salvage...

Expanded foam canvas decoys - how to pictorial

Matt- Dont use plywood unless it is marine ply. I use 1" thick pine boards. My first batches of deeks were made with drop clothes and they worked out fine, as long as they are canvas. I typically get a bucket of hot water and wet out the canvas before stretching and stapling it on the frame. It...

Expanded foam canvas decoys - how to pictorial

Depends on the size, I have been able to get 6-7 deeks out of a can - all large sizes. Its really just a learning curve that you will likely waste a bit of time and $ on at first - but a fun project that you can adjust to your specific needs.

Opener in CA pics and video

Great idea Lou. Covered in tules and little bugs. My wife couldnt figure out where all the little bugs in her Expedition were coming from - must have hitch-hiked on my gear from the tule runs. I stayed mum.

Opener in CA pics and video

Big points Bill - I believe it was one of the last ww2 ships used actively (Persian Gulf). I will try and post up more pics tonight o the fleet - lots of neat history. There are a bunch of the "Cape" boats there as well, I'd like to learn more about their history. Ryan- I stand when running...

Opener in CA pics and video

What an interestingly odd opener this year, unlike any I have ever had. It all began with it being the 2nd time in over 28 seasons not hunting opening weekend with my old man. The morning started bad with me driving 40+ miles with the gas cap off the boat tank, basically filling the tub full of...
