    Off Roading on Public Lands

Eric, Sportsmen of all types have been dealing with the stereotypes for years. The camera loves to reinforce all the negative stereotypes to generate views. Organizations like Tread Lightly and others work to improve the image. Years ago my state rights group instructed members not to show...

Painting bottom, rub rails. cockpit coaming, and decoy rack

Steve, The deck was fiberglassed with 6oz cloth and 3 coats of epoxy. Yes, I fastened the shoe molding with screws. I preferred screws over ring shank nails to get the shoe molding to bed against the coaming sides. Trying to nail into position against the coaming sides risked driving the...

Painting bottom, rub rails. cockpit coaming, and decoy rack

I was wondering why the skeg was radiused instead of straight like most small boats. I thought it was for motor clearance.

Painting bottom, rub rails. cockpit coaming, and decoy rack

The next step was to install the skeg on the bottom. Following plans, one was fashioned out of white oak. I also decided to add an external strip to protect the keel. After this was completed the bottom of the boat was sanded and given 3 coats of paint. The boat was turned over and work on...

Unless a local university kept copies or has the corporate records I think you are out of luck. This is interesting read though. https://iiif.library.cmu.edu/file/Heinz_box00159_fld00008_bdl0015_doc0003/Heinz_box00159_fld00008_bdl0015_doc0003.pdf

    Rail Skiff Build

I think that lumber requirements are one thing missed in boatbuilding. Getting air dried lumber stock means buying your own from a small bandsaw operator and waiting for it to dry. That means at least a year wait before beginning building.

    Rail Skiff Build

With epoxy and paint it is a waiting game between coats. That seems to be taking longest amount of time. What size BBSB? 10'? Rick

    1947 Sam Grant Sneakbox

When John Brady was head of Independence Seaport in Philadelphia he concentrated on workboats. After he left the museum, Independence Seaport disposed of all the small craft in their collection. Chesapeake Maritime Museum has a few boats but they are not part of any display. The Ward Museum...

    1947 Sam Grant Sneakbox

Keep saving them and posting photographs. I enjoy the details of how builders approached problems differently. I think that is first time I have seen decoy racks used to hold up the oar locks. Since most maritime museums don't collect or consider working craft it is great that someone is...
