Johnathan, on the last few that I just finished up I did my best to stay away from the eyes. But, while blending I did get some paint on them so I took a Q-Tip dipped in thinner and carefully swabbed it off. It will also come off when scraped if done soon enough.............................Best...
Thanks John! I may be tapping into your expertise for painting tips.
Eddie, I'm a Fire Captain and Bob is a Battalion Chief. When we're busy we're busy. When we're not then we make the most of it..........................Kevin
Hey George. The black is not yet cured. I will be sure to add the white to the neck.
Eddie, I brushed the detail on. No scratching here.
Chief Bob, I'm at work as well. I will call you later. With the snow and wind coming lets hope for a quiet day.
Michael, I like the easy clean up of the acrylics ofcourse. But, I would never go back. The consistancy of the oils is much better and I really like the finish better as well. It may be phycological but I also feel that they will never need to be re-painted again. Touch-ups...
Jay, the pad weights that you see there in the background were formed from sheets of lead. A friend and talented carver Lenny turned me onto this. I bought them from a guy in PA. I tried the pouring mold thing last year and had a terrible time with it. They looked lousy and are very brittle...
I carved both of these last year. I finished both up today. Re-painted in oils (Ronan's and Grumbacher's.) Got a lot of inspiration for the blackie from Keith Mueller's posts. Thanks for the great pics Keith............................Kevin
Keith, don't feel bad. I used to post picks inline all of the time. Now when I try it will just not allow it to happen. As soon as I click on the image icon in the advanced editor it dissapears. I have to resort to posting images as attachments. It's not me or you it's these blasted...
Keith, close ups would be great! Question for you................Before painting the feather detail do you first draw it on with a wax pencil or something or do you just paint?......................Kevin
Steve, The Ocean County Decoy and Gunning Show is in Tuckerton, NJ in Sept. Lots of decoys, boats and retrievers. There are hotels in Manahawkin and maybe others as well.................................Kevin
Thanks guys. It seems that from what I've been reading the older ones are a carb change only. Anything late eighties and up are more involved..........................Much apreciated..........................Kevin
I am getting conflicting reports on this now. Can I upgrade my 1999 Johnson 9.9hp to a 15hp by re-jetting the carb? My buddy's dad says yes but I am reading otherwise. It can't be that easy right?..........................Kevin
Gary, you have a talent with the pencil! If you are using a photo reference then try measuring the photo in numerous locations and then transfering those measurments to the drawing. To the proper scale ofcourse. I hope this makes sense. Try another. Get the initial sketch right before...
John, here is one that I coated with titebond and sawdust just this morning. By tonight the mixture in the voids will be plyable. You can shape it with you fingers at this point.................Kevin
I have done some repairs on Beans using the method that I mentioned above. But, I'm with Chuck here. I personally like the look of the cork texture. I'm in the process of re-painting all of my old Beans and am leaving most of them natural unless they are missing cork......................Kevin
