    ???What double barrel to buy???

Whats affordable? $1000 has always been my limit for a duck gun. These guns can be found under $1000, look for Chrome lined Barrels(steel shot safe) Italians have been doing this since the 60’s. Modern spainish guns are not chrome lined. The only guns listed that I know anything about...

    ???What double barrel to buy???

Rick I would tend to agree with you about modifying guns. The only things i would add is at some point there is not much collector value in the gun, only valued as a shooter. Two criteria, condition and rarity are the driving factors. A fox sterlingworth, or a field grade Smith that have no...

    ???What double barrel to buy???

Just a few thoughts on modern guns. Most of the inexpesive stuff is made in Turley now days, even the $2000 price tagged Webley. A lot of these guns look nice, but as someone else pointed out quality control is an issue. Second putting that kind of money down on any new turkish gun, you will...

    Decoy Research

Your right, upper bay decoys, have many styles of reheads. most either put there own style on without concern for fit. or if the orginal carver was reheading then the head woud fit better but coud still see it was exact. All 5 of these heads fit the decoys they are on nicely, with some...

    Decoy Research

I agree, bodies I was more at 4-5 different carvers. decoy 5 interestly has a Koshkonong wieght, but has a painted brand J.B.F that is listed in the Decoy brand book, being found on a Nate Quillen decoy. Could be lots of J.B.F. intails out there but both decoys should date to same time period...

    Decoy Research

I don't know whats its called, but the Bill "on" the head is common in upper bay carving. I would agree head #2 nice. Not being an expert on other regions carvng at that time(1900 +/- 20yrs) but that is some of the more reallistic carving I have seen on a gunning decoy from that time period...

    Decoy Research

the reason I posted the pic without bodies is these style heads are found on three types of bodies. To me all three heads are the same maker just over time. Bodies are quite different. I theorize this because all these decoys pictured below are attributed to Lake Koshkonong. The single pic...

    Power carving bits....

all of the above. The blacks just take more off with less pressure. Orange bit leaves a smoother surface, I will use the orange on Basla though. For many carvers its probably not a problem, but I like using less pressure and shape the decoys. As opposed to digging the bit in. It maybe why...

Help, need pics of tom chambers and other "flats" black duck decoys

Sorry I can't help. But to me Chambers cans and redheads are some of the the most pleasing to the eye of any od decoy. I recenty saw a Len Suzor jr. decoy that was styled after them, should have bought it.

    Decoy carving hero...

Very nice Pat, I love the history and you are fortunate to have been in the midst of it and appreciate you passing it along. That would be something to have a decoy from that day, as you think how many rigs were left out and lost. I will have to put that on my list of decoys I would like to...

    Who built my BBSB?

I would have to see larger closer pictures, but I agree looks like a Classic Barnegat when sold in kit form. I have one and but my stringers are not wood, but could have been part of an early kit.

    ???What double barrel to buy???

I will add that it would be hard to find but an older 10ga gun that has had permanent 12ga chamber sleeves put in professionally. My brother has a prussian JP sauer, like that, it iis a big gun that he will shoot anything through. Acts like the modern back boring, accepts 3 1/2" shells.

    ???What double barrel to buy???

For modern steel shot, barrels should be open choked enough, shoot slower(less pressure) steel loads, barrel clearances are sufficent and stock isn't oil soaked or cracking. I shoot a number of old guns for waterfowl and upland. For waterfowl, my everyday gun is a 1926 LC Smith Long Range...
