Power carving bits....

I'm out of the loop, havent used the power carver for its intended purpose in a few years and I need some new bits.... I really like the black typhoon bits, but as I understand it, they aren't available. I need a new big ball nose cylinder, X-mass tree and big regular cylinder to replace mine that were abused in various hack jobs around the house. Any suggestion for similar or better?

I've been using Saburr bits, shop on line for the best price or sometimes splurge at the local (but franchised) mom and pop Woodcraft (mine is really run by a mom and pop type...little lap dog roaming the store and all). I use the green bits because I'm a wussy wannabe...if I were a manly man I'd use the orange bits like George.

Thanks Carlos! I like the look of the orange ones - I can see where you may opt for the green if you were reasonable. We used to have 2 woodcrafts near by, but they both closed. We got nothin' now :(.

I'll have to get online and order - too bad that we don't have someone who supports the forum that we could buy from - damn shame.

Orange bit does not compare to the black bits. I don't know what I am going to do when I have replace mine.

In that case, I'd suggest that you don't use your black ball nose cylinder in a violent battle chucked in a drill to enlarge a hole through a top plate of a wall that had a couple apparently very hard nails in it. I don't know what happened to my others. I still have my favorite, though - my black 2" "sanding" sleeve.

Willy at the Duck Blind sellls them and I think Jaymes Co. has them also. You can't go wrong with either place.

thats my favorite bit as well, even use it on heads. :-) The still make the disk in black, so I was curious and just called Kutzall, they plan to bring the Extreme Black bits back, they don't have a time frame though. whew!!!!!!!!!!

As a serious question, why is orange not as good? Cutting speed? Smoothness of Cut? Resistance cutting?
 
all of the above. The blacks just take more off with less pressure. Orange bit leaves a smoother surface, I will use the orange on Basla though. For many carvers its probably not a problem, but I like using less pressure and shape the decoys. As opposed to digging the bit in. It maybe why my black bits are still good, GW would go through them left and right.

Thanks. The black seems to take off an awful lot of material for the effort to control it, I sure like them. I'll get some orange.

Tod the orange ones will get the job done real quick. Pretty close to the black typhoon but cleaner. They should last you forever. The green are pretty aggressive too when it comes to the softer woods but the finish of the orange is pretty good so that's most of what I use. I like that Saburr tooth does a good job at not having that 1 stray tooth that leaves a deep gouge. I get mine from wood carvers supply in FLA. Flat rate shipping and a great catalog. Good luck

orange saburrs do the trick-Nice thing about the teeth is that you can cut in either direction. By using more or less pressure on the material, it is possible to rough or even lightly prep for sanding, unless you like a bit of texture. I use a christmas tree for heads, ball for finishing hollow stuff and the bullet shape for bodies, both cork and wood- With a deft touch, it is even possible to use on balsa!
Old problems with typhoons, imo, was that the shafts lost temper and went out of true. With that said, they were pretty good grinding bits.

Finally the mystery is solved! Harker gave me a couple of the big black ugly typhoon bits some time ago cause they were making his hand numb. I couldn't use them in a flex shaft but not as bad in a big heavy die grinder. We never could figure out why they got like that... Til now.
