Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

Another day means another few questions for the group. I managed to get the boat flipped over to get a better look at the hull tonight. That was an interesting exercise solo. The bad news is after poking around the strakes further, I decided the two outside ones will probably need to be...

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

The recommendations are much appreciated Steve and Jim. I'm still fumbling my way along, but making some progress. My workmanship is probably a step above questionable, so having a boat that lacks good finish is great place for me to learn some things without feeling too bad about the results...

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

Steve or anyone else with experience with this - Can you summarize your installation process for the Beckson deck plates? I've got the holes cut and the 6" plates dry fitted into my sponsons. I imagine I should predrill all the fastener holes. I'm thinking I should probably give the fresh cut...

Anyone running a Yamaha 25 HP 4 Stroke?

I appreciate the input provided so far. I wanted to mention I've also gotten private messages from a number of folks that are using this motor and had positive things to say.

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

Saturday was a good day for progress. I was up early to beat the heat, and was able to get all the fiberglass laid on the rail. I used 8" fiberglass tape from US composites, I think it is 8oz. cloth. I got it all down, then waited until it was tacky and went back with a second layer of epoxy...

Anyone running a Yamaha 25 HP 4 Stroke?

I know there are lots of 2 stroke folks on here, but I'm interested in anyone running the new(ish) Yamaha 25 4 stroke and what their thoughts are. It looks like the weight is down to 126 pounds, and according to Yamaha it outperforms their 2 stroke 25. I wish Honda had a 25 with that weight.

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

I appreciate the continued advice and encouragement. I really have no idea what I'm doing so it's good to hear nothing I've done is too far wrong to this point. The inside of the hull does have areas with differences in the surface elevation, so I will plan to fill those in as well. One thing...

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

I still had a little bit of filling to do before everything was smooth and flat and ready for fiberglass, so went ahead with that this week. Probably applied more than I needed to, but I learned this weekend it is easy enough to sand it down to where it needs to be. A night or two of sanding and...

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

Progress has been slow but steady. I finally finished getting the edge of the deck, the rail, and the upper hull sanded off and ready for the new fiberglass. I know I've got a long way to go, but I was ready for a bit of a break from the constant sanding. I'm still waiting on the sanding...

    New Boat Is Here!

Really really nice looking boat. I'd be comping at the bit to get it out on the water for sure.

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

I've made a bit of progress on cleaning up the sheer clamp/rail in preparation for new glass while waiting for all the parts of my new sander/polisher to arrive. After a night of sanding with my orbital sander, I'm already looking forward to being able to use that bigger, more powerful tool on...

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

I've been able to make a bit more progress while waiting for some tools and equipment to arrive. I've gotten the rubrail fiberglass removed from the entire boat, and I'm about to start cleaning the edge of the top deck. I had one area of the rail that had bad wood. I dug it out, and it went...

    sander/polisher recommendations

I'm looking for recommendations on everyone's favorite sander/grinder/polisher for a stitch and glue boat construction/restoration. I've just started on a Devlin BBII boat repair, and I've read and heard from a number of folks how important this tool is. It looks like the one that Sam suggests...

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

The bad news is the keelsons don't look like they are going to be a easy fix. The screws were indeed run up into the hull and then ground off. I got one or two to come out, but there are already a few with broken off heads, and one broke on me with pretty minimal pressure. I think the keels...

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

The advice so far is much appreciated, keep it coming! I had some time today to get started. I got a fair of chunk of the fiberglass stripped off the sheer clamp. The good news is that most of the wood looks really good. It looks like the builder ran the glass from the deck down over the rail...

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

The third and most obvious, and maybe (?) most serious issue on the boat is the state of the fiberglass on the sheer clamp, and possibly the condition of the sheer clam as well. For a good portion of the boat, the fiberglass is peeling up from the sheer clamp. The front doesn't look to bad, but...

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

The second problem area are the keelsons. The metal runners are in pretty bad shape or missing in some areas, and there are some areas where the fillets along the side look pretty bad. My first though was just that I should probably take off the metal runners, do some clean up and assessment and...

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

The first issue that I've noticed is the hull. The outside looks pretty darn good, but the inside has a few problem areas. It doesn't appear that it was ever painted. There was a removable plywood floorboard that had two 2x8 supports. The braces weren't shaped to the hull of the boat or rounded...

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

Hi folks, I've been reading posts and admiring the craftsmanship of those on this forum for a number of years. I'm happy to say I recently purchased my first wooden duck boat, which I believe to be a Devlin Black Brant II build. Unfortunately, it looks like the odds of me tracking down the...
