    NDR....dog related

My 13 year old lab had begun bleeding as usual with her heat cycle back in late October/early November and hadn't stopped and the flow had increased. After several visits with our vet he convinced us to have her spayed. He thought maybe there was something else going on and this would be the...

New multi use hub ground blind I just got

I've been looking for years for a multi purpose deer/turkey hub type ground blind that would double for waterfowling. I finally found it. The problem was it was it came up in my feed through Temu. So I started searching for another source and came up with a site called GoPlusUS. This is a new...

Had to make a dash of a run to Arkansas as my father-in-law passed on Sunday. Arrangements had been made as it wasn't a surprise. My wife's dad wasn't a hunter as an adult but understood my passion for hunting and what it represented to me. Through his contacts I had access to a lot of Ozark...

    33° in Tampa!

Thinking of ya Carl. Lizards dropping like flys. Our cat used to love watching them drop to the concrete. Then as the sun warmed them they'd slowly get to going again. Funny how hunting here in that temp is nothing but hunting the bay down there was brutally cold!

It's cold outside but nothing better than a hot pot full of goose stew!

It's the simple things in life. Goose stew and a Bush Light!

Finally, a couple of ducks in the snow.

It's been a long hard season here. But finally the ponds are frozen and the ducks come back to the river!

Guenther Garvey or Whistler or what is this?

I've been looking over the plans Eric put up of the Guenther Garvey when I came across a boat for sale on Market Place. Unfortunately it was sold before I could get to talk to the seller. While searching to see if I could identify the boat I realized it was a Whistler which is also one of the...

    Duck season opens Saturday!

But the Mississippi River is so low the back waters where I was hoping to find an open blind are not to be. I can't get my big ole V bottom back in these skinny waters. Soooo, I improvising. After getting a new outboard this year I know better than to ask for more. The Fed regulates blind...

    Morning walk about.

I went deer hunting this morning and decided to take a walk around and check out a couple of duck blinds. The water is so low many of the interior island blinds aren't accessible. This is why we don't use wooden boats on the Mississippi River in my area. Prior to the DNR putting a stop to using...

    Dry bag question

With the Mississippi River so low this year I'm going to be spending a lot of time in a canoe. Not knowing anything about dry bags and capacity does anyone have any suggestions. I'm thinking coat, thermos, lunch, binoculars, shells, flash light, extra gloves, head coverings, dry clothes, fire...

Question for the canoe paddling brothers or sisters

I would like to use my canoe a little more than I have in the last decade. I find I prefer kneeling keeping myself to a lower center of gravity and to the widest beam of the craft. Unfortunately I'm finding my knees, back and ankles are not happy with my decision. During my drafting days I had a...

Hitting some upper Iowa trout streams this week.

And maybe a trip over to Prairie Du Chien, WI for a walk about in Cabela's. This morning the trout eluded me but I'll be back. Then back home to get ready for bow season and some brushing on my Drake duck bind.

    Sometimes it's the simple things...

I decided to smoke a couple of goose breasts today. A simple brine of water celery salt and onion. Then 6 hours in the smoker. Finished frying in a pan with barbecue sauce. Delicious on a bun with tater tots!

    My new outboard came in.

I took the plunge and went with the Suzuki outboard. Have yet to get it on the water though. The flood here in Illinois is finally going down so hopefully this week it'll get its maiden voyage. September 1st isn't far off.

    PPF motor bracket

I have a PPF motor bracket I had made with a notch in it for clearance of a tilt latch for a Yamaha 25hp so I didn't have to remove the bracket to use my outboard. No longer have a use for it. $45 plus shipping. Thanks.

The old outboard is on its way out.

Does anyone have any thoughts on buying an outboard online? My old 40hp Mercury is having some issues and the quotes are $600 - $1500. It's a 1996 and I'm thinking it's had a good run. Throwing $1500 at it probably isn't a wise decision. Add another $500 and I'd have a fair down payment on a new...
