You can often pick up old plastic decoys for a buck or less and paint them black. They already have keels etc. I even have some I could get rid of, so check out craigslist in your area. Somebody likely has some to sell.

I used boards on some black cork decoys. 3/4 pine boards. When I do it again, I will resaw the boards thinner. 3/4" doesn't seem thick, but the kiln dried pine was very hard and a pain to carve. Although it could just be the local non-carving pine the boards were made out of.

If you want four pounds, you will need to go smaller. A low head would also help-less keel weight needed keep it upright.

I have a dozen black-cork brant that I made which I am considering repainting to Canada paint scheme. Although they a much smaller than the giants, they are good cackler size. But my main concern is will they bring in birds. I think they will.

Thanks for comments on the swan. It was one big heavy block of wood. It sure is fun and satisfying to make your own decoys, as everyone her knows. It just adds a whole new dimension and gives you a good excuse to talk waterfowl all years long.

The fair is just starting this afternoon. I didn't put my phone number on it, but someone could easily look me up. I did want it to seem like an ad. I doubt anyone will contact me, but just maybe it will spark some interest in someone and get them out doing outdoor or woodworking related stuff.

I just had to figure out how to cram them all in there without it looking like they were crammed in there.

I put some of my spread that I constructed on display at the county fair this weekend. I entered it as a 'collection'. Hopefully it will help get some kids interested in ducks and decoys. There is more to life than the electronic world.
