Great South Bay Scooter Rehab - SEA TRIALS AT LAST !

Very interesting, Steve. Thank you for sharing this. I know what you mean about building new being faster than a restoration. I've had the same experience with wood and canvas canoes. You think "I'll get this little rehab done before I finish the new boat that's being planked up". The new boat...

    Bandsaw blade Question

Plus one on Timber Wolf, from Suffolk Machinery in New York. They are helpful on the phone, if you tell them what you're doing they will advise. I've used the blades on several different bandsaws. http://www.suffolkmachinery.com/Catalog.pdf Cricket

    Thank you Steven J Sanford...

I've only been here a short while, but I've gotten so much info already, particularly about the boats. Thanks Steve! Jim

What's on your WORK BENCH - August 2020

One of the pair of bedside tables is done. I just have to put in the drawer and top, plus hardware on the other one. We are painting the bedroom, so it will be a bit before I can install them. Now, if I have the chance, I'll try to get started on the headboard. The tables will make more sense...

    Transducer mount

VHB tape is a good idea, especially to trial a location. You could always screw the transducer on after you know the location works. I went through a similar trial with mine on the PC23. It worked perfectly as originally installed, until I chopped off the wedges under the hull (too much bow down...

What's on your WORK BENCH - August 2020

Thanks for the info, George. I guess for decoys that hunt, the cork is much lighter than hollow wood. It sounds demanding to carve. I visited your bio at runamuck.com, and see why you settled on cork. MFA, abstract painter. Very interesting, indeed! I look forward to seeing more of your, and...

What's on your WORK BENCH - August 2020

It's August already?! Good Lord. Nice work on the spring house Steve. Looking forward to the painting of that Brant. Does the cork come in sheets, or thick billets? I had not seen cork decoys until visiting this forum. How easy it it to shape, without tearing off chunks? Thank you for posting! Jim

    What IS Your Workbench?

I had wanted, before the thread dies, to show some simple fixtures that I find useful on and around the bench. I'll make a couple more posts, and if anyone else has some specialty stuff to show, please do! One of my oldest shop fixtures is this set of plywood beams I made back in '86 or so. My...

What's on your WORK BENCH - July 2020

My hardware for the mission bedside tables came. Looks pretty good, about what was expected for the price point. Anyway, finishing continues. Here's a couple pics of the door pulls. This door has one top coat of Osmo over the oil stain. Gets one more, then buffed out. I'm pretty happy with the...

Grumman canoe sail ? Need help.

Steve, that's a sweet little decked boat, Sweet Gherkin. I've always rigged my boats with mid boom sheeting. Besides not having a sagging sheet overhead, it makes jibing a snap. Just grab the sheet block at the boom, and flick it over. None of that hauling sheet in and letting back out. Even my...

Grumman canoe sail ? Need help.

Bob, longer leeboard, for sure. You only really need one. The leeboard thwart should move aft considerably. I'm going to say 28-30" aft of the mast. You'll have bad weather helm that far forward.I've attached a link to a basic rigging guide from one of the old time sailors, who designed the 44'...

Grumman canoe sail ? Need help.

Hi Rick and Bob, At the risk of ruffling feathers, I'm going disagree with a couple of points. I think you should learn how to jibe safely, and practice (in light air at first). There may well be times when you lack sea room to wear around, and a jibe may be the only option. I agree that a...

    Motor Board Details

Steve, great motor board primer. Thanks for sharing this. I wasn?t familiar with these until I started looking at the low freeboard duck boats. Jim

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

The boat looks great, Richard. I like that Yamaha 25, too. Very light. Also, thanks for the link to the manual jack plate. Seems like Steve?s Wood Motor board would work though. I think you definitely want to get the cav plate up closer to the right height. I?ll look forward to your solution. Jim

Advice for a newbie on a Devlin repair/restoration

Hi Matt, yes and yes to your questions/comments. I use quite a lot of Penetrol initially to thin, and on a long session will add more as I go, particularly in hot weather. I do use some Kirby thinner initially but it?s mostly Penetrol. I think George?s batches will vary somewhat being thicker...

    What IS Your Workbench?

Vince, that's a very nice carving setup you have there. I have an old red Fuller #5 steel vise, quite a bit like yours there. I like the idea of putting it on a heavy, cast iron stand. I'd really like to get going on some carving, but that will have to wait for a bit, I'm afraid. Getting the...

What's on your WORK BENCH - July 2020

Nice table Brad! Yes, I?ve used the Osmo once before. It?s a superior product. I did a bubinga staked stool with milk painted legs, black over red. The Osmo worked well over the paint too. I like to wet sand the oil on application and buff it out once dry.

What's on your WORK BENCH - July 2020

I made some progress on the Mission bedside tables over the weekend. Brought everything home to the little studio, and spent nearly 2 days sanding everything. I had forgotten how much work finish prep on furniture can be. The tops were finished, and the little backsplash glued on. I made up...

Grumman canoe sail ? Need help.

Bob, I struck out this weekend on the rudder gudgeon. We must have sold those sailing Grummans we had, as they are no longer on the boat racks. That fitting is Vee shaped in section, to fit the stem, and is held on with a fast pin and ring ding. The tricky part is getting the pintle holes lined...
