Long Island Waterfowling Traditions DeQuillfeldt Family

Thank you Steve, I was still curious so I did a bit of research on my own and turned up this: RM https://www.carolinasportsman.com/hunting/waterfowl-duck-hunting/curtain-duck-hunting-blinds/#:~:text=Some%20hunters%20say%20this%20is%20an%20inch%2C,they%20are%20sitting%20in%20the%20middle%20of

Anthony, I love the old sink box hunting photo. One thing that I have always wondered about is how a curtain blind is legal but a sink box isn't? RM

Henry, Not to change topic, but I just had a thought that you may want to look into. I don't know what kind of fasteners you intend to use on your grassing rails, but attaching a nut and washer at the farthest reaches can be about impossible. Better to dry fit and epoxy a nut and washer in the...

Henry, I racked my brain on this same topic and came to the conclusion that flapper boards work better on smaller cockpit, layout style boats. A large cockpit like yours is a bitch to hide and The Duck Boat Company blind is the best solution that I've seen. In fact I originally considered...

    Folbote in Clifton, TN

Absolutely beautiful skin on frame. I'm surprised more boats aren't done this way using epoxy and cloth; either kevlar or glass. RM

Henry, It was definitely out of my comfort zone as well, but isn't that the point? Canceling the boat is as hard as the actual build but is very rewarding if done right. RM

Boat building: Best way to attach canvas to coaming?

Josh, Good point; the tool you use makes all the difference. I started with a snap set, the type that requires a hammer, but quickly purchased one of these and it made all the difference. RM...

The Kara Hummer was my first build. I sucked at poling so a mud motor was soon added. RM

Boat building: Best way to attach canvas to coaming?

Matthias, Steve pretty much nailed it. The only thing that I would add is if you are forced to go the Snap route, be sure to use Stainless Steel. If you can't get SS, the Heavy Action brass will also work. Common Sense fasteners really are the best but expensive. RM

Dan, I always marvel how a pup, at eight weeks, can be taken from their mom and they just happily cleave to their new family. Looks like you have a bundle of joy. Good luck with your training although I believe my dog has taught me more than I have taught her. RM

Henry, Perhaps overkill on inland waters but since you fish coastal you may consider a thru hull transducer. Those cheap plastic transom transducers always find a way to break, particularly on a duck boat. Your initial cost would be higher but I think it would eventually pay for itself at $200...

Henry and Matthias, One advantage of crown to the deck is the strength that it adds. Additional reinforcement may be required on a deck without the requisite crown if you intend to walk on it. RM

Henry, One more thing that you might want to think about is any blind supports such as stanchions that protrude below deck. Speaking from experience, it is much easier to add these things now than to retrofit later. RM
