    Belle's first Montana season - 2019

Well done, as usual, Dani. Thanks for sharing. It was good to see both of your bird-silly grins on the prairie even if via a trip in the sorta-wayback machine. You?ve probably heard but it was a brutally hot and dry summer here and it appears upland broods took a major hit. The dove hunting...

    Outstanding work, Dani. Thank you.

    ISO portable depth finder

You might want to check out the Garmin Striker series. It?s a reasonably-priced portable combo of GPS, depth finder and fish finder. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/528812 https://youtu.be/JoWbSkOpWAo

    Am I too old?

Good thoughts all. As I find myself just south of the big six-oh-my-god, I too have been trying to get creative in my approach to the solo hunt for the long run. Despite adding a Yakima Showboat 66 roller to the rear of my truck to aid in roof-topping my Alumacraft Ducker or canoe, a few nearly...

    With a shattered heart

Boy, I was not prepared when stumbling upon this truly sad news. Despite never actually meeting Steve in person, I find myself grieving with the others who found this site....and Steve....years ago. He never failed to evoke something between a chuckle and a belly laugh from me while stating...

What was your first set of hunting decoys

I had limited engineering skills at age 12. [;)]

What was your first set of hunting decoys

Early 70s, a dozen styrofoam shell mallards from Pamida for $0.47 each. When a wind gust blasted them, the entire spread was immediately upside down and airborne. I don't miss the decoys but I wish I had snapped a photo of the price tags.

First Gadwalls of the Year Have Arrived

Not sure why but it?s been gadwall-palooza here so far this year. I?ve never seen so many.

    Sandhills

I traded a few mule deer steaks for one of several sandhills a co-worker brought back from North Dakota this fall. Although I'm not certain I could pull the trigger on one even if I drew a permit here, I'm certainly looking forward to the experience of tasting one!

    Finding the perfect buffie decoy

I would agree that "perfect" is in the eye of the beholder...er, hunter but last Sunday provided more examples of how buffies are really drawn to "their own kind" whether a Styrofoam cup or well-carved deke. I had six groups of 6 to 15 buffleheads come by and all of them attempted to land within...

    Extreme mediocrity post & pics.

Very cool. I too love the Yin/Yang coot!

    Saskatchewan

I had a mixture of GWs and BWs last weekend. It surprised me as well still seeing the BWs around. I figured they were long gone.

Question for those of you that work/hunt your dog everyday

Similarly, Bru was a chow monster as a pup to the point of eating his way thru two plastic food bins and a baby gate. It's difficult to believe that, now 4 years old, the same dog is content to sleep in and forego eating until midday or later of his own volition. Since a lot of our hunts are for...

Anyone else paint their facemasks ?

Steve, I too haven't found a lot of options out there with an opening for calling let alone very many that weren't designed to be worn during the Storm of the Century. However, Primos makes a 3/4 version with a mouth opening that may be to your liking although the color options are limited...

    It must be duck season

We're still 19 days (but who's counting) from our opener so I'm not holding my breath on the BWs. No doubt plenty of GWs behind 'em to keep me happy.

    It must be duck season

One of my favorite potholes near the border had loads of BWs a couple of weeks ago but I fear you may be correct, Paul. A darned chilly north wind blowing this AM.

    Sage grouse hunting in Montana

We've got a cool spell arriving just in time for the elk archery opener tomorrow. Hopefully the forecast comes to fruition and snuffs out our local fires on Sunday and Monday.

    Quality foam decoys

Ain't that the sad truth. I too am embarrassed to say I fell for what appeared to be some good ideas but reeeeeeally poor implementation. The customer experience felt like throwing money out of a moving vehicle and I've seen better painting by kids under age 8. The only response I ever...
