    Our old Black Brant

We built our Black Brant in 1989 and it has now met the end of the road. Through collisions, running aground, swampings, etc , and multiple repairs we've kept it going. Now while getting it ready for season 33, holes were found in the bottom and half of the flooring has gone soft. The old girl...

    Best Hearing Protection?

I've used Peltor Tactical 6 while shooting sporting clays. They're low profile and aren't near as expensive as some other electronic muffs. They seem to work well but I've never tried them while hunting.. I think you can get 'em for $60 + / -. Here's a url showing them for $59...

    Remington 870 repair question

Eric, I had the same problem as Wayne on my 1100. Being a backyard machinist, I just 'beat the hell' out of it ( I think with a hammer and screwdriver ) and it's worked fine since.

    Camo'ed up my Chuck Huff

Sweet job! One question for you... how do you keep the grass attached while hauling the boat over the highway? Or do you grass it up after reaching your destination?

    Lawn Mower motor problems

Hi Andrew, Wow, this is a good one but I don't mind taking a few guesses. Of course, I could be all wet :-) First, if the carb has a float & float bowl and the pump puts out enough to fill the bowl, I think the pump is ok. A 'slow pee' should be probably be enough to keep fuel in the...

    motor problems

Pete, So you're sure there's no spark? I was thinking that if you haven't run the motor in a while, there might be some crud in the carb or gas line. With today's gas, I've heard ethanol is bad on outboards. If it's truly no spark, it sounds like you're on the right track - back to the box.

What is the Speed of Your BBSB

My Black Brant, stretched a foot to 15' 5", with a 1990 25hp Yamaha outboard, empty with just me in the boat, I get 22mph as clocked by the gps.

New Blind Design! What Do You Guys Think? (with pics this time)

Hi Brian, Sorry, I didn't mean to express any attitude - just constructive criticism. I think it's my writing style, as I've had comments before. Just can't seem to get it right! From how you described the construction, it should be easy to unbolt the hinge and flip it over to the other...

New Blind Design! What Do You Guys Think? (with pics this time)

Brian, Far be it for me to redesign your boat, but... assuming you and your dad are both right-handed gunners, your 'sweet spots' will be forward and to your left, so shouldn't you be laying on the other side of the boat? Among other advantages it would be somewhat safer.

New Blind Design! What Do You Guys Think? (with pics this time)

Brian, Not sure if I understand the setup. So you're laying in the boat and then sitting up to shoot? Do you have to flip up the frame before shooting or can you just sit up? How is the other hunter laying? Facing you? Thanks,

My spray dodger is just about complete!

Hey Chris - looks nice! Question: Are you going to sew 'brush loops' on the dodger to hold grass, sort of like the straps on a layout blind?

    Wait for it...wait for it...

Hi Brad, Crenshaw was with us Tuesday am. I'll make sure to say hi to him for you. Yes, I took the pictures on the Dead Creek site. Haven't seen Fuller in a long time.

    Wait for it...wait for it...

Hi Eric, Thanks for asking about the wrecked Brant. Yep, it's back together. We used it last season and I've been out in it a couple times this summer. It's perfectly sound. I wish I'd taken some pictures of the damage but didn't.

    Wait for it...wait for it...

Bill, On this particular 'shot', we captured 80 birds and 29 had bands that we'd put on earlier this year. I think they're addicted to the corn. For example, one young banded hen mallard, when released, just started walking over the net to the corn. We had to 'shoo' her away...

    Wait for it...wait for it...

Thought this might interest you guys. I've been helping the local biologists capture and band ducks, and finally took some pictures today. Here's the setup - clear an area near a pothole, set it up with rockets and net, bait it with corn for a few days, hide in a blind, then wait for it...

Share your screw ups - minor and major

I got married. Responsibilities really cut into the duck hunting... :-))

What do the mallards eat in your part of the world?

Mildly related to what mallards eat... A few years ago at the office, I moved up our weekly department meeting because I was going duck hunting on the originally scheduled day. While mentioning my planned activity to the group, one lady immediately turned angry, saying "Duck hunting! My...

    Dead Creek Day this Saturday

Hi Brad, Nice to hear from you. There have been major changes / improvements at Dead Creek over the years. A few years ago when the snow geese started using the refuge many people were stopping on the highway to watch them, take pictures, etc. Needless to say this was causing a road hazard so...

    Dead Creek Day this Saturday

Eddie, Yep, it's always the first Saturday in October, so it's in conflict with bow season opener every year. There just aren't enough Saturdays in the fall!
