Dead Creek Day this Saturday

If you live in Vermont or northeast New York, here's a fun day for you at the Dead Creek Goose refuge in Addison. State biologist Dave Sausville (I don't know his official title) is the host. There will be tons of exhibits and activities for people of all ages: retriever demos, wood duck house building, turkey and goose hunting tips, air rifle shooting for the kids, wild animal exhibits, waterfowl id sessions, rocket netting demo, plus many many booths hosted by DU, state agencies, federal agencies, craftsmen, etc. I'm sure I've forgotten a lot of things, but you get the picture.

If you decide to come, stop by the decoy carving area and say hi. My buddy Mike and I have a bunch of rough cut cedar blocks for people to try their hand at carving. We've done it for a number of years now. It's interesting that kids and women jump right in and try their hand at it but men seem to be too self-conscious to try.

It's a fun, free and educational day for the whole family! Here's the url to the poster and schedule:

Eddie,

Yep, it's always the first Saturday in October, so it's in conflict with bow season opener every year. There just aren't enough Saturdays in the fall!

It has been 30 years but I remember Dead Creek from my undergraduate days at UVM. My advisor at UVM established Dead Creek and all the students in Wildlife Biology at the University studied and planned improvements to Dead Creek as a Senior Project. My management plan was one of the crowning accomplishments of my undergraduate studies. I still proudly display it on my library shelf. I don't think any of us foresaw the shift the influx of Canada geese and then snow geese that has been experienced. I remember many college hunting forays to Dead Creek, sleeping in the parking lots ready for many early morning hunts. I shot my most memorable black ducks there in 1976 and 1977. Cheers to Prof. Bob Fuller of UVM and a resident of Addison for his vision in the establishment of Dead Creek. I did my first professional study of wild turkeys on Snake Mountain based out of Dead Creek.

Hi Brad, Nice to hear from you. There have been major changes / improvements at Dead Creek over the years. A few years ago when the snow geese started using the refuge many people were stopping on the highway to watch them, take pictures, etc. Needless to say this was causing a road hazard so a viewing area was created on the south side. It's a 500' pull-off and roofed shelter. Very nice. Now for the last couple years the snow geese haven't stopped over and the Canadas are just starting to re-establish a their prescence. The hope is the population will increase to former levels. Time will tell.

BTW, I live at the base of Snake Mountain. The turkey population has just exploded across the whole area!
