10 decoys, a handfull of shells, the gun and the dog = fun hunt.

You know we put all this time into boats, big spreads of decoys, planning, scouting, and the most memorable hunts are always the low tech ones for me. Last year it was a few woodies and mallards on a beaver pond before work. This year I think it was a few days ago.
Bird numbers are scarce right now up here. The Bluebills are gone and the bufflehead and few goldeneyes are in small groups a dozen or so and spread all over. A few days ago I did some scouting durring work and found where some buffies were feeding on a lake not to far from home.
The next morning I slept a little later then other hunts since all I needed to grab was the bag of 10 hand caved decoys, my gun and the dog. I drove out to the lake and set the decoys 3 buffies grouped together 3 goldeneyes off to the side and the remaining merganzer and bluebills spread out in between.
The dog and I tucked up against the rock breakwall and waited for the sun to come up. When light arrived so did the first bufflehead and the puppy was getting wet. 24 degrees out with a heavy west wind I was cold but the dog didn't seem to mind the work one bit. Over the next hour I shot a limit of bufflehead and nothing else. I tried for drakes but they were few and far between so I ended the day with half and half and two of the drakes were not very mature yet. Shooting was great the decoys were in tight and the birds didn't hesitate to come right in. Every bird was shot between 10 and 15 yards. One cripple made a nice run but Bella caught up to it and stuck with the diving bird until she managed to grab it.
What made it so fun was how simple it really was. I snapped a few pictures while I was out there.

Looks like a fun hunt. I went out last week with 2 decoys. Shot just as many ducks as I did the week before with 18 desoys (ZERO!) So if your down to Buffies and Golden Eyes, where did the rest of the birds go? They didn't show up here.

I recognise your buffy decoy, is that your Eye as well?

Thanks for the pictures,
Chuck

Glad you guys liked the pictures.

It seems like everyone is having a hard time finding birds this year and we are no exception here. Canada is freezing fast as is the UP so you would think birds would be pushing down to all of you.

The bufflehead were carved by me intended to be simple gunners carved start to finish with paint in under 3 hours like the old time carvers did. Mine averaged 4 hours.

The Goldeneye are actually EAllen painted by a guy in lower michigan. I had 4 but lost one out of the boat last season.

Brad, we are allowed 6 birds a day with some species and sex restrictions. Bufflehead I can fill my entire bag with and I could do the same with Goldeneye. Bluebills for part of the season I can shoot two right now though only one. mallards I can shoot 4 but only 1 can be a hen. It sounds complicated but its just part of the unt to know what we can and cant pull the trigger on.

Hey Brandon, very cool.
Ya know, if I had to make an assessment of that Hen Buffy from the picture.....I'd call it a Juve. Drake & not a hen. We found that almost half of the "hen" buffy that we shot were actually Juve. drakes. Take a look at the white swipe on the head. It looks to be too big and "high" to be a hen. So......you may have shot a drake and didn't know it.

When working with the USFWS years ago, we shot 3 GE....3 drakes, 1 hen & that hen was "full dress" (including the orange swipe over the bill). Well, once the biolologists dissected it for their studies......it was a juve. Drake.
Later partner,
Lou

Ok...Ok... ;) Just found the GE I was talking about. This was a late Dec. hunt with USFWS and the middle "Hen" was actually a Juve. Drake.

Whats with all that white stuff? Bella is turning out to be a retrieving machine isn't she? I have pretty much quit for the year down here as its so hit and miss with the birds. I may get up to Caseville for one last go around the bay somewhere but I don't expect to much.

Hey Denny,
I wouldn't hang up the gear yet. The birds should be hitting Lake St. Clair any day now. The nice weather we've been having like this during the season(9th year in a row) has pushed the migration back...but, they WILL be coming down. About 12 years ago, during one of our "weekend at Lou's", the birds didn't really hit the lake until about 4pm the Friday right after Thanksgiving and ............ it just so happened that my son, Brian, and I were in the layout boat. We both limited out in less than 10 minutes. It was the things dreams are made of. ;)

About 6 years ago, a week before Christmas, we had rose bushes in full bloom at the lake house (23 Mile & Jefferson in New Baltimore) and buds still opening up. The birds didn't hit the lake until about 2 days before Christmas.

There are birds up in Anchor Bay and Mitchell's Bay but it's a bit scarce right out off Metro and surrounds.
Give me a shout if you want sometime. Numbers are on my website: www.lockstockbarrell.com
Later,
Lou

Thanks Lou. Thats a very kind offer. I know about them often coming in around Christmas. My BIL lived on the lake just above 12 Mile up until his passing 2 years ago. When we would go over there for Christmas dinner, any ice free areas would be unindated with Redheads and Cans.
