16' Lund Fishing boat

Maybe someone can give be a ballpark price range for a 16' Lund WC with a 1988(or there abouts) Suzuki DT30C motor? My brother is looking at getting a basic fishing boat for smaller lakes and has found one in good shape. Boat looks to be about the same age as the motor. The motor was basically rebuilt in the last year or two and is very clean and runs well now, the owners son ran it without the impeller working. He has the papers to show it was fixed right and the guy is trustworthy.

My brother just wants to make sure what it's worth.
Thanks,

Tim,

A guy down the street has the 1986 14' version with a 1986 25hp OMC. He's got life jackets, oars, a transom mounted trolling motor and a fishing finder. He's just paid $2795 from a local boat shop.

I'm not sure on value, but I can offer a couple of comments:

1) That is a great motor, I had a Suzuki DT25 (same motor different carb setup), and it was super. I bought it from the fire department I was on after a not-so-easy life of water rescue (firefighters aren't easy on gear), I used it on two boats and then sold it to a friend (on the second boat) and it is still running strong. I disconnected the oil injection more out of fear of failure than anything else (no known problems).
2) I like Lunds. No surprise there if you read these boards. I think they're well made boats. They tend to hold value well, and there is a brand name factor to them. I am not a huge fan of that bench seat configuration myself, but I guess it works okay in a small boat. Double check the hull rivets and the condition of any wood in the boat. Keep in mind a brand new WC is only $2500 +/-.
3) That trailer looks like it has plenty of metal cancer. I'm not a fan of painted trailers. I don't suspect it is worth much.

Basically I'm saying I have no idea on price... Guess between $800-1500?

"WORTH" depends on a motivated seller and buyer. I would say 1500-2500 if selling and 800-1500 if buying. Are there Suzuki shops near-by? If not he will have to do his own work which means he will have to spring 60-90 bucks for a manual. If you are in an area where good used boats aren't on every corner....he may have to pay a bit more. How much is the owner asking?

Also, if he does buy it and there aren't any local Suzuki dealers, let him know about Brown's Point Marina (http://www.brownspoint.com/). I have a Suzuki on my current boat. We don't have a local dealer. They are too reliable, kind of like a maytag. The old dealer (The Small Boat Exchange) that sold the one to our fire dept way back when them got out of carrying them. So, I order parts from Brown's Point and do the work myself. As Steve would say Easy Peasy...

Suzukis are known for their reliability. I came close to buying a 40hp with the help of Mark Schuup last fall but upon closer examination learned the motor was an earlier model (about the same as the one you are looking at maybe a year or two earlier) for which parts are not available except for the most basic things like a water pump (only the impeller was available, not the housing) and spark plugs. Check Suzuki parts suppliers and see if they still cover your motor. A phone call to a certified supplier will go a long way in seeing if things like carb kits, lower unit seals, etc. are available. If the design hasn't changed you should be covered. If it is 20 plus years old and has been redesigned you might find used parts very difficult to obtain. I called several Suzuki repair centers and was advised not to purchase the motor based on lack of available parts.

I guess he wants around $1500. Tough to tell by the pictures how serious the rust on the trailer is. There are a lot of used boats but they sell well in my brothers area so it sounds fair. It does have a few extras but nothing worth more then a couple $100. I think he should offer $1250 and walk away, I think the guy will sell to him if he is close.
I'm not a big fan of the bench seats either but for what he wants it to do, fish lakes mostly under 200 acres with a couple kids, I think it would work. I'll tell him to check where the guy had his motor worked on and see if they can still get parts if something happens. I had heard Suzukis last but you never know.

Thank you,
Tim
