Wondering what kind of gas the 1987 Evinrude 40hp Tiller is gona consume? Trying to decide
if a 6 gallon tank is enuf or do i NEED to go to a 12? The old 25hp Go-Devil would suck up
about a gallon to a gallon and a half per mile of river.

The marina is getting her tuned up good found a few gasket issues and throttle cable
was getting bad and new battery cables.

I would like to stick to a 6 gallon tank longest runs 2-3 miles for my normal hunting.

Thanks

Dave,

As long as the 40 hp will get you and you load up on a running plane, I would expect anything from 5 to 7 miles per gal from your outboard. At 5 miles per gal, a third of a 6 gal tank will get you out 10 miles and a third to get you back. That still leaves you with a 2 gal reserve.

Thanks dave the old owner said he was getting 20-25nph with 4 people in the boat and that was with all the plywood and he was no lil guy either. Can't wait to try it out now gona be a few more weeks yet.

Perhaps others can comment on validity, but I have heard if you take the HP of your motor and move the decimal one place to the left, you have the number of gallons per hour you would consume at full throttle.

I have same one~ 86 40hp Rude. When I had it on a mod. 1654 Polorcraft mod. john, 2 BIG people(over 250#) 4-6 scuba tanks + related gear, I got 21 to 24 miles out of a 3 gal tank. The milage figgure came off an Eagle depth finder. I also carried a 2.5 gal. spare tank, but only had to use once& that was due to having to fight my back against a bad storm that came up. I always ran wide open if the water conditions would let me. That rig would go 37 to 43 mph, depending on water conditions. That motor is now on a wide 16' Cresliner. This rig only goes 27-30mph. I still get 15 or so miles out of my 3gal. tank. Hope this helps ya. I would do as others said& load it up& see what your rig does for milage tho.

Is that correct?
My buddy has a 25GD on a 16x54 GD boat, it gets a lot better mileage than that. We've run 12 miles up river and back on around 4 gallons.

That was on a 1960 lowe rough neck allweld with full steel and alum skinned frame blind 5 dozen diver decoys and 3 good sized hunters. Top speed 12mph with just me and dog in boat. The motor when on my old Xpress got better mpg smaller boat.

This info wont help you with your new motor but in my 1854 Prodrive with a 36hp Prodrive mudmotor I checked my mileage using my Lowrance and got just under 9 miles per gallon. That was with no load and just a fun day at the river playing.

Paul:
That tidbit of info was offered by Tom Scholberg. It was referring to "old iron" which would be an outboard engine pre 1970 or earlier. In my case, engines of the late '50's. They are notorious gas guzzlers.

Dave,

I'm getting around 28-30 mph out of the 40hp Johnson with me in the Tracker. The boat weighs 675 lbs., me= 225, gas= 90lbs, battery= 56 lbs, weight of motor =180 lbs. Total 1228 lbs.

Can't wait to see the finished boat.
