Just picked up this beautiful 1964 Gus Heinrich Sr Speedbox. I got it from the original owners family who said they’re Father took there mother up to Parkertown on a date to pick up his sneakbox. This is the only Heinrichs sneakbox i ever saw with a secondary half hatch with tacked canvas for gunning. Also it is called a speedbox because the Heinrichs designed the planning hull smeakbox

Great save, Bob!

Gorgeous vessel - in wonderful shape. Of course, I have a few questions:

1. What HP would Gus have put on her? I am wondering if she could plane with a 6....

2. What would Gus have used as a backrest? Was it chocked - or otherwise held in place - or just set 'twixt the coaming and floorboards?

3. Looks like he hunted over the stern. Is this the "standard" way in Jersey 'boxes? or do some shoot over the bow? I have (and done) it both ways on Long Island - but shooting over the stern seems the norm nowadays.

All the best,

SJS

Thanks Steve! To answer your questions
1. The boats were set to plane off with a 6hp engine.
2. The backrest is normally just a chocked piece of wood that you lean against the bow of cockpit so you can see over stern while gunning.
3. I can’t speak for every jersey gunner but i was taught and always seen in old photos and from other gunners in sneakbox’s that we all gun over the stern. The bow is always in the marsh.
Hope this helps!
